Editorial Reviews

Review

“In her moving meditation on time, loss, and identity, Garcia explores the corrosive power of long-held secrets and haunting truths. This novel is so richly atmospheric you can see the shimmer of asphalt mirages and feel the crushing heat of the south Texas landscape.” ―Liane Kupferberg Carter, award-winning author of Ketchup is My Favorite VegetableProfound and Perfect Things questions the so-called singularity of experience and enfleshes the connections that make us whole. . . . An honest and searing look at sisterhood that follows books such as Marie Vieux Chauvet's Love Anger Madness in its refusal to flinch.” ―Harriet Levin Millan, author of How Fast Can You RunProfound and Perfect Things is my kind of book―a story of love and sacrifice, betrayal and forgiveness, fate and family. Through her beautifully drawn characters, Maribel Garcia shows us the complexity of ties that bind and asks us to consider what we would―and wouldn't―do for those we love.” ―Kim Hooper, author of Cherry Blossoms and People Who Knew Me “I couldn’t put this book down. Strap on your seatbelt―Maribel Garcia takes her reader on an emotional roller coaster that rides several generations of a unique and fascinating family, with dips, twists, and turns, as well as heart-bursting joys and sorrows.” ―Amy Silverman, My Heart Can’t Even Believe It: A Story of Science, Love, and Down Syndrome “Maribel Garcia’s tender family saga draws readers right in from the very start. Centered on a complicated relationship between sisters, Profound and Perfect Things explores the question, ‘Will the truth unite or forever divide this south Texas family?’ Have tissues handy!” ―Sarahlyn Bruck, author of Designer You “A moving story about the complex love between sisters, Profound and Perfect Things takes the reader on a deeply felt journey into the meaning of family for a new generation of Latinas in search of their American dream.” ―Ruth Behar, author of Lucky Broken Girl “A moving story of love and redemption, Profound and Perfect Things weaves an intricate tapestry of family secrets, discovery, and empowerment along the journey of the feminine, taking us deep into the hearts of mothers, daughters, and sisters. Maribel Garcia is a born storyteller.” ―Susan G. Weidener, author and founder of Women’s Writing Circle “Maribel Garcia's debut novel brings us into the heart of a South Texas family, exploring the powerful bonds that shape mothers, sisters, and daughters and the costs of hiding the truth. I won't forget these sisters' moving stories.” ―Janet Benton, author of Lilli de Jong “A powerfully written novel about the pull of being a mother, the bond of being a sister, and the burden of growing up with traditions. A layered and intelligent story about the dark secrets of a first-generation Mexican American family.” ―Kelly Simmons, internationally selling author of Standing Still and The Bird House --This text refers to the paperback edition.

About the Author

Maribel Garcia is a Mexican-born, naturalized American citizen who is known for addressing bicultural themes that deal with the immigration experience of Mexicans crossing over to the United States. Her stories concentrate on the ways that race, class, gender, and sexuality intersect with family relationships, loss, forgiveness, and self-discovery. Her writing has been featured in academic publications and on the book review site Book Club Babble, which she cofounded and where she serves as managing editor. The inspiration for Profound and Perfect Things comes from her own experiences as both a native of the South Texas Latino/a community and from her anthropological fieldwork studying Mexican American women living on the US/Mexico border. Garcia completed her PhD and MA degrees in the anthropology department at the University of Texas, Austin, and taught in the women’s studies department at California State San Marcos University for five years before settling down to write seriously. --This text refers to the paperback edition.
