I bought this as a gift for my 8 yr old nephew and hr heavily liked it. He also demonstrated the toy in a video and shared with me since he liked it so much. A great toy is one that kids likes it and would want to play with it for hours and this is just the one. Absolutely amazing!!!

3.0 out of 5 stars A decent toy but one which sadly doesn't live up to its promise.

When I was a kid robots were all the rage but if you had a one as a present you would be glad if it made a few noises, had flashing lights and shuffled forward in a very limited way. Clearly things have moved on.

This is described as a smart RC, gesture-sensing robot (on wheels). I have seen more and more products employ gesture sensing, drones for example and even RC cars but this is my first actual experience of one.

It is made of plastic but has a metallic appearance and looks really good in a faux bronze and brushed steel way. It is supplied with a remote control, which requires 2 AA batteries (not supplied), a USB charging cable for the robot itself, a manual, a screwdriver (to open the remote to insert the batteries), a shield and launcher, and 3x bullets for the launcher.

It is programmable, but only in the sense that children (or adults) can use the remote to input a sequence of movements (around 50 they say) rather than programmable in the sense of Raspberry PI/Lego Mindstorm input your own code type thing but useful nevertheless. Enterprising and imaginative kids can enliven their play by using this to help the robots navigate around a maze they build or perform a ‘dance’ routine, which as it can ‘sing’ and play music after a fashion would seem appropriate.

The basic movements are forwards/backwards a you’d expect plus turns in either direction and faster moves forwards and backwards. They work ‘okay’ but they are badly laid out on the control for me. I think it would make more sense to have the turning direction buttons left and right next to each to each other and so on. It overcomplicates things and although it moves quite well its responses to the controls are a bit laggy at times and it all could have been a bit better implemented. Sometimes it doesn’t do what you want or, if it thinks it is waiting too long it starts doing its own thing, which is irritating.

The movements are accompanied by sounds effects, which thankfully you can alter the volume of. I have to admit that after a while the effects grated on me, but kids will probably love them.

As well as all its basic movements (turn left/right, move forwards/backwards etc.) It can also fire bullets and 3 are supplied with it. I was initially a bit concerned about that but my 9 year old son is old enough to be sensible about things like that and not aim them at people. In any case I needn’t have worried. For a start the robot doesn’t actually fire them as I had imagined it would, you have to manually do so by pressing a button on the gun. Also, the bullets sort of plop out in a very unconvincing way, which is better for safety but a bit naff. Nevertheless, it seems a slightly incongruous inclusion alongside the other non-movement based elements e.g. the nursery rhymes, stories, music, English and Science audio functions all aimed at young kids. I guess they wanted to make a toy that would appeal to as wide an age range as possible (they say 3-12), but the danger is you then put off children at either end of that scale - or their parents.

The nursery rhymes, music, story and English audio options are very much for younger children and will not be used by any child over the age of 6 or 7 I expect, but the science option might be I suppose if they are bored. I am probably asking too much of it, but an option to record your own phrases would be appreciated more by older kids I expect.

As I said above the whole gesture control thing is new to me. I think it is a great idea and over time I am sure that it will as be as normal to our children as handling a remote control has been to us. It doesn’t actually work that well in our experience though. Getting the robot to come towards you or turn is reasonably easily achieved but it didn’t want to respond to the stop signal at all.

The voice control just didn’t work for us whatsoever. What is supposed to happen is when you press the button to activate it, this turns the robot’s microphone on so it can listen to what you are saying and respond. There are ‘totally 5 commands’ as the manual says, but it ‘totally’ forgets to tell you what they are. We tried everything from ‘forwards,’ ‘walk,’ ‘back’ etc., but to no avail so either everything we tried (and we tried a LOT) was wrong or our robot is copping a deaf one! Either way it is a non-feature as far as we are concerned. Instead when we pressed voice control it moved and made noises with no instructions which had us returning to the manual again and again thinking we’d mistaken which button to press - which we hadn’t.

It charges via USB and a cable is provided for that function. Charging time is about an hour and play time about the same, which is pretty generous. I think that most kids will start to become a bit bored of it before the hour is up, and be looking to move onto something else, giving you a chance to recharge it.

PROS:
It looks really good. I have seen other, comparable robots that look to be aimed at younger children so it is good that this one looks a bit more edgy.
It packs in a lot of features, with lots for younger children.
The basic movements are good (if slightly laggy) and it is very stable, not falling over once. I should add that we have only used it on hard floor and haven’t tried it on carpet.
The programmable mode is fun and I suspect that this is where most older children will spend their time playing with it.
Charging and playing time are both reasonable.
It feels pretty solid and well made.

CONS:
It occasionally does it own thing.
The layout of the controller is not intuitive, is unclear, and is not suited to younger children.
The voice control feature is either a well kept secret or just doesn’t work and the manual forgets to say what the voice control functions are.
The gesture control is not particularly well implemented.
The price would be reasonable if all the features worked and worked well. Sadly it lets itself down in a few ways and is not therefore worth the money.
The movements can be a bit laggy.
The standby mode is a bit confusing and it would often do its own thing anyway.
What is it? A toy for younger children or older ones? It has tried to be both but failed. Half the features will be wasted or seem silly to older children but the firing gun and movement may be too mature for 3-4 years olds.

OVERALL:
This is a nice idea and clearly toy robots have come a long way. Sadly this one has a way to go to live up to what it is supposed to be able do. My 9 year old son says he likes it but is already displaying signs of boredom and I can see him tiring of it quite quickly. It simply doesn’t implement the features for older children (general movement, gesture and voice control etc.) well enough to keep that age group entertained and engaged. I think younger children will like but it is not entirely suitable for them and they, too, I expect will get bored with it. In essence this robot is a decent enough toy but it delivers much less than it promises and it is a bit schizophrenic is its aim to appeal to such a wide age group. From the spec. and description I was expecting to be amazed but when it came down to it I was distinctly underwhelmed. I don’t know how other gesture control robots compare but I wouldn't really recommend this one.

What a cracking toy.

This is a good size and straight from the box, even with the additional controller not turned on the Robot starts to talk and move.

The Robot has a nice light-up face of various colour. It moves seemlessley and asks for instructions from its master. If you don’t do anything the robot complains.

The Robot has many functions. For the young ones its does the a-b-c and signs “If you are happy and you know it”.

For the older children the Robert can fire missiles - small plastic and I am sure pretty safe.

The robots movements are sleek and when you use the controller, which at first sight looks a little bit intimidating, really is easy to use. All directions commands are easy to follow.

What little boy or girl doesn’t want a lovely robot, my brother had one in his young years, strangely still has it, mainly to show to his kids, and remember his child hood.

Made very good and lots of programmes, fun going through them all
Made with upgraded matte metal appearance…

Wow those LED glowing eyes, beat any horror film😂
Seriously though very piercing

Although the market of the robot is 3-8 years old, can be any age, especially if a collector of robots

Remote control and these are not supplied, one assumes for safety reasons

The robot moves about in true robot style

One button programming function, demonstrates what it can do

Does 50 or so actions, to keep kids entertained for hours and will be the envy of many friends

This would make a great gift to Christmas and birthdays

Decent price currently £37.99

Transmitter programs..

Volume, goes on the list very useful

Battery taken

2x 1.5V AA battery

The side of the large box shows where everything can be found on the robot.
2.4 GHz remote control

Even has firing bullets

It’s ever so cool, believe me, lots of fun for all the family, what the robot can do is so current in toys

The remote requires 2x AA batteries

USB charging cable for the robot.
A manual etc etc

Has sounds which can be turned down as required

Playing time ok, about an hour or so, the charging took about 1 hr 20 minutes, gives humans a break

Personally I wouldn’t recommend for really young kids, I feel aged three to young, to understand, but with supervision from parents, youngsters will get the drift

Robots have got more interesting and more workable…

I found the robot very interesting, a great Christmas present, highly recommended
