This programming cable does use a copy of the prolific chip instead of a genuine prolific chip. As a result the newest automatically installed driver is not compatible. One must uninstall it and manually install an older prolific driver which is compatible with this particular chip. The easiest way to find the driver is to google 'UV-5R driver' and click on the first link to the miklor website.
For reference, just about any programming cable you buy now days is likely to have the copied version of the chip. So in reality it isn't really a downside compared to the competitive programming cables available.
I have used this cable successfully with my Baofeng UV-B5. I would recommend this cable to others, and would reccommend ordering from the same seller as I did which is ' hossen'
In over thirty years of working on computers I have never been this frustrated. After hours of intense effort that saw me downloading numerous drivers that promised to fix the connection issues the cable and the computer were having and rebooting my system a dozen times trying to get the system to recognize the radio, I gave up and ordered the manufacturer's cable.
It arrived in two days and in less than ten minutes I had 6 radios programmed. I am sure I heard angels singing.
Fit and finish of the cable is great. No loose connections, every things is well made on this unit. In fact, it'll certainly outlast any radio.
Drivers will be required. If running Win 7 or later, the drivers on Baofengs site with not work. Go to miklor dot com slash uv5r, and under his drivers tab you will get both the drivers and fantastic directions (if you found it useful, flip him a buck or two under his donations... won't hurt and will keep sites like this up and running... same with chirp)
Not sure how long it will last, but seems adequately constructed. Doesn't seem cheaply constructed, but doesn't scream high quality either. At this price understandable. Included CD had Win7, Vista, 2000, and MacOSX drivers. It also included a bunch of radio specific programs for radios other than Baofeng. I assume all are freely available. I didn't use anything off the CD and can only comment on the contents. If you have a Baofeng use CHIRP!
OS X comes already with drviers for the FTDI chipset. I tried running it out of the box without installing the provided driver, it did not work.
Then I downloaded and installed drivers for the Prolific chipset, it didn't work either. Tried plugging it on another USB port and nothing happened.
The cd that comes with it is just a regular 8cm CD-R with the drivers on it. No label, no nothing. They would not work either.
The packaging is dubious, no brand name no nothing.
It looks like this is a rip off of some other USB programming cable.
I am extremely frustrated.
