An introduction to fundamental theories of concurrent computation and associated programming languages for developing distributed and mobile computing systems.

Starting from the premise that understanding the foundations of concurrent programming is key to developing distributed computing systems, this book first presents the fundamental theories of concurrent computing and then introduces the programming languages that help develop distributed computing systems at a high level of abstraction. The major theories of concurrent computation―including the p-calculus, the actor model, the join calculus, and mobile ambients―are explained with a focus on how they help design and reason about distributed and mobile computing systems. The book then presents programming languages that follow the theoretical models already described, including Pict, SALSA, and JoCaml. The parallel structure of the chapters in both part one (theory) and part two (practice) enable the reader not only to compare the different theories but also to see clearly how a programming language supports a theoretical model.

The book is unique in bridging the gap between the theory and the practice of programming distributed computing systems. It can be used as a textbook for graduate and advanced undergraduate students in computer science or as a reference for researchers in the area of programming technology for distributed computing. Theoretical part is great; code examples use outdated languages

The text certainly deserves five stars -- the author explains the concepts with absolute clarity and he was very wise in deciding what he decided to include in the theoretical description in part I of the book.

However -- while the book was perfect when it came out, the programming examples in part II quickly became outdated:

- the language used as example for the Pi-Calculus was Pict, an academic research language by Pierce. There is only one implementation, which is several years old, and I gave up trying to compile it after a couple of hours. Occam-Pi would be an alternative (and is better known), but it is unfortunately also dead, it seems.

- the language used as example for the Actor model was SALSA. This is also an academic research language, created by the author himself (with Gul Agha). While the code seems great on the book, it is not really useful, since I could also not compile SALSA (its page on Github also shows that there hasn't been much activity in several years, and it uses an ad-hoc build system. And in this case, there *was* a better alternative: Erlang is based on the Actor model. Why not use it?

- JoCaml used for Join Calculus examples) also hasn't been updated in a while (since 2014), but seems to still work.

So -- the book is great for learning the theory, really. But the second part isn't much useful.

This book is now a good source of theorical material, I'm currently using this book because of the theorical material but the book is also great in demonstrating how programming languages implement the concepts in practice.
