There are 2 major brands: Technology Research Corporation (TRC) Surge Guard and Progressive Industries. I had a TRC brand product for a couple of years and then I purchased a Progressive Industries product. The reason I bought a Progressive Industries product are as follows:
1. Made in U.S.A. (TRC not made in America)
2. Lifetime Warranty (TRC 1 year warranty)
3. Surge Indicator: If surge protection failure occurs within the system,
the Progressive product has a "Surge Indicator" that alerts you of the
system failure. (TRC does not have this; the TRC product will continue to
operate but provide no protection)
4. Open Ground Protection: If the pedestal is not ground properly your RV will still
operate but you and your RV become the ground; this is not safe
5. High/Low Voltage Protection
6. Time Delay for A/C Compressor
7. 3-Mode Surge Protection
8. Reverse Polarity Protection
9. Open Neutral Protection
10. AC Frequency Protection
11. Accidental 240V Protection
12. Built-in Lock Bracket: Allows the unit to be secured to the power source to prevent theft
13. Made in the U.S.A. and Lifetime Warranty
Low voltage is worse than power spikes. It can really do a lot of damage to the expensive appliances in your RV. The Progressive box probably saved my wallet a lot of pain. Glad I bought it.
We had a very bad storm with lots of "close aboard" lightning strokes, the kind that blow up transformers and this device must have "sacrificed itself" to save my 2016 Airstream. When I called the company for tech assist, they said "just it back, we will replace it for free.
Amazing, worth every penny!!!!
Expensive, but a comparative BARGAIN on Amazon. The point is that it REALLY WORKS. The locking tab also fits nicely with a sturdy combo lock that also matches the cover port hole in most power pole snap covers.
As an ole 1200# steam engineer with a little bit of "paralleling with shore power" experience, you best appreciate what voltage drops and spikes can do to your electronic devices.
Before surge protectors became common, I learned to UNPLUG my Apple II (circa 1978) whenever I "heard thunder." Even then, I toasted 3 power supplies in that poor little Apple.
Nowadays, if you are a "worth your salt" serious RV zealot, you have your iMacs (2), iPhones (2), iPad, and GoPro cameras (6) all plugged in at night and just the normal starting and stopping of all those ac plants hooked up in the campground will cause serious voltage drops.
The US Navy has tried to handle this problem with "bumpless power" as we strive to asymptotically achieve steady state power supply.
So... when we got the new 50amp rig, I bought this protector and started using it immediately. Works just like it says, you do nothing and it just does it's job. If it does trip, it auto resets. Cool. And the lifetime warranty is really nice.
Great product and I highly recommend it if you want to save expensive electronics in your RV.
