alternative to the cafeteria. It does the job and makes
the right amount of steamed vegetables for a single serving.
I'd estimate it takes at least about 1 1/2 cups raw veggies by
volume if not a little more. I followed the directions and
put inside the measured amount of recommended water, but now
I just turn on the faucet and put in what looks about the same
as the measured amount. I also reduce the power on the microwave to a medium high and follow the recommended minutes for the different veggies. I wrote on the bottom with a permanent ink pen the recommended times and water amount as a reminder for myself. After microwaving the directions say to keep the steamer closed for a few minutes. So far I've steamed broccoli/cauliflower/carrots and green beans in it with perfect results. Made in China
> Thick, rigid (only slightly flexible) plastic. I received green, not white as in the photos.
> OVERALL: 7 1/4" diameter (including handles) X 3 3/4" high
> UPPER (steamer) SECTION: Interior 5" diameter X 2" deep, holds 2 1/2 cups level with top; contents can be heaped under domed lid for a total volume of ~ 3 cups
> LOWER SECTION: Interior 5 3/8" DIAMETER x 2 1/2" deep, holds ~ 3 cups level with top; maybe 3 1/2 cups heaped under domed lid.
> I use small glass casserole dishes for "steaming" most vegetables. Most vegetables will steam in a covered container from their contained moisture. The secret is to match the size of the container with the amount of vegetables you want to cook---so that the steam is concentrated and doesn't escape before doing its job.
> I use this steamer for 2 situations: 1) For cooking diced onions, when I want the moisture they release to drain off. 2) When cooking dry vegetables, such as pole beans, and diced baking potatoes.
> Dishwasher safe---but dry in upper rack or turn off the forced drying (most dishwashers have this option, but it usually is not the default).
> My dishwasher has no forced drying, which saves a lot of $ electricity and plastics last much longer. Metal pots and ceramic plates dry fine from the heat they retain from the wash cycle. The plastics are wet at the end of the cycle, but air dry quickly. The inconvenience of having to let your plastics air dry is a small price for the much longer life and the saved $ electricity.
RICE: They say you can steam rice in a microwave, in which case, this container should work. In my experience, cooking rice in a microwave takes nearly as long as a pot, and doesn't work as well (at least for me). However, if you cook rice in a pot and it comes out undercooked, you can salvage it by steaming 5 minutes in a microwave---and it will come out perfect.

The steamer compartment is a cylinder 2-1/2 inches (10 cm) high and 5 inches (20 cm) in diameter, with the top and bottom edges rounded off. That's about right for a single serving of any of the above vegetables. Each of the three pieces (top, steamer basket, and bottom) has tabs that make them easy to separate. The top is clear but the basket and bottom are opaque grey microwave-safe plastic. The basket has feet so that it can be set on the counter top without touching, sort of like a mini-colander. That design makes it easy to drain any excess water from the cooked vegetables.
Bottom line: This is a very well designed, durable microwave tool that's perfect for my needs. Highly recommended for anyone wanting to steam single servings of fresh vegetables.
