You know those thick clumps of solitary weeds you want to get rid of...the ones that have roots that go to china...well this does the job.
I'm a 63 yr old petite woman and was afraid the tool would be too heavy for me...but it surprised me by being light and easy to swing. The head does all the work and since it's easy to maneuver I don't get worn out using it.
Every woman should have one of these. My next project is clearing out my raised bed garden as it has become compacted and overrun with vines.
The edge comes sharpened and I used my file to resharpen it after I was done. I'm thrilled as it's hard to buy some products online and get exactly what you wanted/needed but this one is a winner!

Fantastic tool for cutting trail in root/vine covered hillside. Handle might be too short for you
Reviewed in the United States on September 7, 2019Verified Purchase
putting in 300 feet of switchback walking trail in a hill covered with tough Ivy strands, roots etc. No one had a good solution, and several gardening crews said they did not want the job. Swinging a standard pick ax in the hot sun was brutal and very slow going. This tool cut 3 times as fast and the 5.5 blade is the perfect concentration of power for tough going. The 40 inch handle is a perfect curved geometry, love it.... because I was standing on a steep hill it was long enough but too short for flat. If you are over 6ft not sure the handle will be long enough. As others mentioned I did not see any benefit to the smaller pick side, it doesnt do anything better than the big edge. I actually put a few layers of duct tape over it because I was imagining what could happen if I fell on that thing! Keep away from kids, this is a serious tool. Id love a 46 inch handle!

THIS TOOL IS HEAVIER THAN EXPECTED...NOT REAL SHARP. HAD BURRS ON CUTTING EDGES THAT WERE TOO EASY TO FILE DOWN...IE. STEEL NOT AS TEMPERED AS I WOULD WISH...WELDS PROBABLY DURABLE, BUT SLOPPY...GOOD HANDLE NOT WELL FINISHED...I WILL SAND IT DOWN AND RECOAT TO FILL THE GRAIN...IT IS PROBABLY A MONSTER TOOL IN USE, I AM JUST A LITTLE UNHAPPY WITH LACK OF ATTENTION TO DETAIL...

I am president of the Central Texas Trail Tamers and have been building and maintaining wilderness trails with this Rogue Hoe since I bought my first one in 2017. For any job that doesn't require the full capability of a 5 lb pick mattock, this is my go-to tool. I have to be sure it is back in my truck after every project because so many people want to use it. The price has more than doubled here on Amazon since I bought mine, but I would probably - no definitely - pay the current price to replace it if I had to. It really is that good.

I bought this hoe in advance of a Scout service project -- widening a trail around a lake. I also brought my mattock. Other brought Pulaskis. This was far and away the most productive tool. The weight, blade shape and handle geometry make this tool a beast. I never did find a place where I needed the small end. Maybe if I were hitting hardwood roots, but I was able to sever any root with the broad end.
It came sharp, but I was able to improve upon that. It will hold an edge too, but will ding if you hit a rock hard enough.
Only beef is why ruin a good handle with varnish. I know almost all manufacturers do it, but I was hoping Rogue wouldn't.
Certainly, I will look at Rogue for other tools in the future.

I purchased the Prohoe to use on a trail project that we have been working on. The first day I had it on site two of my fellow volunteers tried to "borrow" it! It works great and it has become my favorite tool. The handle is the right length and it works great for benching and chopping through roots large and small. The pick end could be a little longer but there are other versions available through this manufacturer that may be better for you. For my money this is the perfect tool for trail work. I would strongly recommend purchasing this. American made was the clincher!

Bought this tool to do benching on a new trail system we're building. Wonderful tool! At first, I could not for the life of me see where the fuel went, or even how to start the thing up. And it didn't come with any instructions. Fortunately, I have surrounded myself with knowledgeable and very capable trail builders, and they showed me how it works. The head on this thing is as sharp as a knife, making easy fodder of tree roots and hard-packed soil. About the hardest workout I've had in many years I can tell you! Next time I will opt for the gas powered version....

This is a really stout tool. The weight and heft will surprise you. It’s as heavy as a foresters grub hoe or fire-line mattock. For cutting sapling whips at the stem, it’s the best. The handle is really thick up top at the head, and tapers nicely. It’s untreated wood, so oil it with your favorite concoction and you’ll have a tool for a lifetime. I’m impressed.
