I haven't finished the book yet so I will edit this review when I finish, but even less than halfway through I already love this book more than anything else I have ever read. In just the parts of the book that I have already read Robinson has managed to fit multiple intense action scenes, Tons of the great character interactions that this crossover promised, and some wonderful character development for more than half of the main cast. Robinson has definitely made the most of this crossover idea. I would have been happy if this book just showed my favorite heroes quipping and snarking at each other and working together to save the world, but Robinson has done far more than that. By placing all of these unique and developed characters together Robinson is able to use their interactions to show us new sides of their personality, and to further develop their character. The action scenes are also top notch and highly varied; delivering an intense fast paced experience unmatched even by the previous nemesis books.
Okay, I’ve finished reading it and, this is definitely my new favorite book. I have been anticipating this book for nearly two years now, and not only did Robinson deliver on everything I had hoped for in a series climax, he actually managed to exceed my expectations by a wide margin. While it is always sad when a good series comes to an end and you realize that there will be no more adventures with your beloved heroes; this is the best end to a series I have ever seen. Everything I liked about the first part of the book was only improved upon as the story went on.
If you are new to Robinson’s work you should probably start at the beginning of the series, but this book is still incredible even if you haven’t read any of the novels that tie into it. That said, if you have read many of Robinson’s other works this story is absolutely brimming with cool references and Easter eggs.
The ending of this book is absolutely perfect with all of the action, humor, and page-turning drama you could want. Culminating in a climax that is triumphant but bittersweet, and closing in a series of epilogues that tie off the last of the story’s loose ends and serve as a fond farewell to our beloved heroes.
To me this book was everything I loved about the previous Nemesis books all rolled into one package, sprinkled with the best bits of Robinson’s other works, and then made even better than before. This book delivers on every promise it makes, both as a Robinson verse crossover and as the end of the original kaiju thriller series. I don’t think that there could be a better ending to the Nemesis saga than this.
This quote perfectly expresses how I felt about the last installment of the amazing Nemesis saga. I knew it had to end, and I was sad about that, but what an end!! Project Legion easily surpasses the previous four books (and that is a tall order) for humour, action, suspense and pure fun. Jeremy Robinson has long been an author, whose books I will buy as soon as they are released, and this is the reason. You can always guarantee a great read, moments of laughter, heart-felt emotion, and a story that will keep you riveted.
The book also brings together characters from many of Jeremy's other worlds, in a cross-over extravaganza, the likes of which I haven't seen before. Even though, you don't need to, you will get much more satisfaction if you have read the previous four Nemesis books (Project Nemesis, Project Maigo, Project 731 and Project Hyperion), as well as Island 731, MirrorWorld, Atlantis Nazi Hunter (AKA I Am Cowboy), and The Last Hunter, as well as least one of the Chess Team books (Prime, Pulse, Threshold, Instinct, Ragnarok, Omega, Cannibal and Savage).
I should point out that, while I was gifted with an advanced reader copy of Project Legion, I still bought the book on Kindle as soon as it was released.
Jeremy Robinson was quite ambitious with his final installment of the Nemesis books. He attempted to tie in characters from several of his other books and series, including from his very first novel, in an effort to make this story even more epic. As a fan of many years, I feel he succeeded brilliantly!
The integration of the "guest stars" is mostly seamless. Crazy's appearance is sudden, but explained. Everyone else is gathered during the story, their roles clearly defined. The team does at times lack cohesion, as they are all strangers. However, as trust and familiarity build so the the strength of the group.
Without providing any spoilers, there are several surprises throughout the story, and Rook and Hudson provide plenty of comedy. There are also some 80's and 90's pop-culture references that particularly appeal to readers around Robinson's own age. And of course, the action scenes are plentiful.
I both love and hate this book. The love is for the reasons mentioned about, especially the whole team-up. The hate derives from that facts that the Nemesis series is over, and that the aforementioned team members are separated and returned to their own worlds. In short, this book is too cool!
I've read almost everything of Robinson's, but there have been a few novels that fell through the cracks of my reading schedule. Needless to say, now that I've been introduced to these characters and alternate worlds, I'm eager to jump back in and explore more!
The ONLY reason I'm knocking off a star is because of the language. Love the action, love the characters and the dialogue, but could really do without the constant f-bombs.
