The first chapter starts to answer many of the questions we have, and we learn more about Lexi as the story unfolds. Lexi keeps to herself and is shy, closed-off, and doesn’t share with anyone (with the exception of her roommate who has been her lifeline since her freshman year in college). Lexi has to take a communications class for her degree and missed the first few days of class during which the professor announced there would be a group project which would require students paired together to interview one another with the goal being getting to know another person on a deep and personal level. The professor shared that the project was also designed to complement the psychology and journalism programs, therefore making students dig deeper into emotions that are not usually shown to others.
The communications project throws Lexi together with Derek, another student who is almost as much of a loner as Lexi – neither one shows much emotion to others and does not like to share about their past, so this project is challenging for both of them. Both Lexi and Derek want to have good grades, and that is the initial reason they meet to start on the project. Throughout the course of the project, we learn that both Lexi and Derek have experienced many types of loss (some different and some the same), and are at different stages of the healing process.

Lexi will forever live with the fact that doing the right thing is also the very thing that tore her family apart. She grew up with three siblings a mother and father but also a boat load of secrets and lies. When college starts she packs up and leaves to get as far away from the memories and people as possible. She begins her new life with one friend, her roommate and a heavy load of college courses to keep her busy. Only two people in that area know about her past, her roommate and her therapist and that is how Lexi wants to keep it. Plans don’t always go as she wishes when she is thrown into a project for a class with the assigned partner Derek.
I will just admit it now I loved Derek. He is so focused on getting his education he won’t even live on campus and get involved with the party crowd. He went down that path for a bit earlier and his sister reminded him that he was who she looked up to so now his focus is on being the man his sister and mother can be proud of. He carries so much guilt and baggage regarding three important people in his life, but that guilt has also allowed him to see the pain in Lexi’s eyes and the need to protect her becomes stronger than any other emotion he has felt.Read more ›
Her roommate from the beginning has been her rock. She’s the only one that knows what happened back home. She knows when the anniversary of the trial is and knows to watch for Lexi crawling into herself.
Derek Fressen transferred to San Francisco State University after attending a community college in Seattle for a few years. Most of his credits transferred except one, a communications class. And that’s how he meets Lexi.
The two, both who have been through tragedies, are paired up to work on a project together. The goal is to get to know the other person and that’s exactly what happens with Lexi and Derek.
The first time she meets Derek outside of class, she faints. In Project Lexi by Lisa Survillas, you will read about the journey of these two students, who have more in common than you’d think. Watch as they really get to know each other and form a relationship that could last through the ages along the way.
I was a beta reader for this book and I absolutely loved watching the story come together. The chemistry between Lexi and Derek is undeniable. Derek is a strong-willed, caring man who only wants what’s best for Lexi. Lexi is getting stronger each and every day, but now she has another person to lean on as she heals.
Lisa Survillas is a really talented writer. She knows how to make the story come alive. She puts emotion into her writing and you, as the reader, can feel that. And that is what makes a story great.
I cannot say anything bad about this book. It was perfect in all aspects. Lisa worked really hard and I know she is proud of the outcome. This book earns five stars from me!
