Editorial Reviews

From the Back Cover

A new edition of the most popular book of project management case studies, expanded to include more than 100 cases plus a "super case" on the Iridium Project

Case studies are an important part of project management education and training. This Fourth Edition of Harold Kerzner's Project Management Case Studies features a number of new cases covering value measurement in project management. Also included is the well-received "super case," which covers all aspects of project management and may be used as a capstone for a course.

This new edition:

  • Contains 100-plus case studies drawn from real companies to illustrate both successful and poor implementation of project management
  • Represents a wide range of industries, including medical and pharmaceutical, aerospace, manufacturing, automotive, finance and banking, and telecommunications
  • Covers cutting-edge areas of construction and international project management plus a "super case" on the Iridium Project, covering all aspects of project management
  • Follows and supports preparation for the Project Management Professional (PMP®) Certification Exam

Project Management Case Studies, Fourth Edition is a valuable resource for students, as well as practicing engineers and managers, and can be used on its own or with the new Eleventh Edition of Harold Kerzner's landmark reference, Project Management: A Systems Approach to Planning, Scheduling, and Controlling.

For full use, you need to request the Instructor's Manual from the publisher - Wiley. WIthout it, all of these case studies are incomplete. The book does not provide answers to questions posed. Unfortunately, after attempts to gain use for my class, I was unsuccessful (even after working with Wiley via email directly). Very disappointed. Otherwise, the case studies seemed like they could be helpful, though most are in the realm of manufacturing/construction not newer project areas of software or healthcare.

Poorly written case studies. This book is difficult to follow though its different looks at case studies. It jumps around chronologically, makes up fake scenarios, and depicts dialog between project workers and managers that are unrealistic and awkward. The author did not stick to a single style throughout the book so each case study takes at least two read throughs to understand what the hell it its talking about. I bought the book for a PM Class and everyone thinks it is a GARBAGE book. Glad I only spent $10 on it. Might be able to make use of it as packaging material when I move.

This book has little merit with respect to the cost. The case studies are redundant in their illumination, as it were, of what project management is really about. It hasn't much to offer those in the profession and not much else for those exploring and learning the discipline.

This book is absolutely terrible. I was forced to rent this book for a class and I despise the professor for making us use this piece of garbage. The case studies are all the same, all the author had to do was copy/paste from case to case.

Worst of all, none of the case studies actually address problems that PM's face, it's just about whether or not companies should implement project management. The author creates imaginary situations that are so ridiculous I had to stop reading and answer the homework questions purely on guesses because I was so disgusted with this book.

Some parts of the book are excellent and other parts could probably have been left out. i think it could have been half as long. i did like the Motorola study a lot and also the study on Challenger. There were parts of the book that I could really relate to coming from a background of law/procurement/project management. All in all I think it is useful for university students in particular but they need to skim past the parts that are a little superfluous. If you are studying project management though I think this is one of the better texts out there. The make up stories or stories from authors experience i think made it a more interesting read. I note some bad reviews but this is not supposed to be a phd thesis.
