If you want to hear more from Esther, check out her recent appearance on the Tim Ferriss podcast and on This American Life episode "Fermi's Paradox."
In the episodes, we basically get to sit on Esther's shoulder as she counsels couples about how each member wants to be loved. The first episode focuses on a Muslim man and Russian woman (which starts off with the fact that he had an affair, and quickly devolves into what happened to the emotional intimacy in the marriage in the first place), a Lesbian couple where one member feels like she is taking care of the kids all day and the other member feels like they no longer have the intimacy since the kids, and then there's Talk French to Me (this I'll just let you figure out), and the fourth episode delves into a couple wherein the male had several dalliances and affairsfor almost four decades and his wife recently found out.
Her ability to empathize and put each member at ease, honor each perspective (even when she doesn't necessarily agree with them), and relate that perspective to the partner is vastly illuminating. She also provides direct coaching on what one member of a couple may or may not need in a moment. It is both inspiring and CRAZY GOOD at the same time. The most helpful moments were where the podcast would cut away from the couples' sessions and Esther would be talking to the podcast listener providing her thoughtful analysis or reasoning for choices she made in session or what she believes the underlying cause affecting a current situation might be.
I hope they do a follow-up in a few months of what happened to these couples.
As for difficulties in getting the material from Amazon, I think if you download the audible app, they allow you to get the current first four episodes (at least that's how it worked for me. UPDATE: If you have an audible subscription, it comes 'free' with it as long as you download the app.
If you like this podcast, you might also like Dear Sugar, where she was a guest host about cheating and what that means for a relationship.
I hope she continues sharing - -
Thank you for allowing "us" to come into your sessions more importantly thanks to the couples!!
But if I understand the product description correctly, this is just the prologue to the book. The details says it has a listening time of 1 minute. For $3.49?! I suspect the cost per minute works out to more than a personal session with Esther Perel. It seems to me this is either mis-described or hugely mispriced.
