By Mike Tarrani HALL OF FAMETOP 50 REVIEWER on June 12, 2013
This model has relatively stiff bristles like its Pro-Mark TB6 Telescoping Wire Brushes sibling, but a different form factor and feel.

While this will extend to a full 12 5/16", the handle diameter is a relatively skinny .494 inches. It has a nice balance, and the textured handle is a thoughtful design feature because after prolonged periods my hands tend to get sweaty.

Other characteristics I love include the fact that the pull rod action is smooth and positive. By that I mean that if I want to position the right brush with a narrower fan for a more staccato sound when doing eight note triplet ostinatos all I have to do is find my position and slightly twist the rod. The bristles will hold their position. I also love the harder plastic end opposite the bristles that sound good on cymbals, blocks and even rims. This greatly increases your sound palette.

The defining characteristic, though, is the stiffness of the bristles. They are just a step below the TB6 mentioned above, and will not only project, but will give a degree of rebound too. If you play louder music you may want to give these brushes serious consideration.

This is the new version of the TB5 model. The main difference is the handle on this version has a textured, non-slip grip and a different color. At the time of this review the older model with the dark handles is depicted in the product photo. I have uploaded a customer-supplied image that shows the correct model.

Among the Pro-Mark brush models this has the second stiffest set of bristles. They are heavy and are good for pop and Latin/Brazilian styles, but not necessarily for ballads. However, if you want one general purpose pair of brushes these will work for any style of music if you take the time to master the nuances of this model. My biggest hurdle was the bristle wire gauge.

I love include the fact that the pull rod action is smooth and positive.

These brushes are about the same diameter as a 7A drumstick, so if you normally play sticks in the .5 inch diameter range they will feel good. They have a nice balance, and the textured handle is a thoughtful design feature because after prolonged periods my hands tend to get sweaty.

Overall, not a bad brush and definitely one worth considering if you want a pair that can cut through louder music.
