"Beth Wiseman has written an unforgettable book that takes the reader into the heart of darkness in the most complex society in the world, Pakistan. The Promise has many tension-filled moments laced with wonderful imagery and detail. Do not miss this book!"
"The story of Mallory in The Promise uncovers the harsh reality American women can experience when they follow their hearts into a very different culture. Her story sheds light on how Islamic society is totally different from the Christian marriage covenant between one man and one woman. This book is based on actual events, and Beth reached out to me as the heartbreaking real-life story unfolded. I salute the author's courage, persistence, and final triumph in writing a revealing and inspiring novel."
"The Promise is an only too realistic depiction of an American young woman motivated by the best humanitarian impulses and naive trust, facing instead betrayal, kidnapping, and life-threatening danger in Pakistan's lawless Pashtun tribal regions. But the story offers as well a reminder just as realistic that love and sacrifice are never wasted and that the hope of a loving heavenly Father is never absent in the most hopeless of situations."
"Promises. Easy to make, far easier to break. Beth Wiseman tells a gripping story of promises, both made and broken. Mallory's journey, along with Tate, is one for the ages. The Promise is on my All-Star List."

“Takes readers to a place where promises mean something very different than expected, and where her protagonist realizes that the life that needs saving is her own. … Wiseman draws readers into a world of deception, danger, and defiance. Readers will feel the anguish of Mallory’s loved ones as they pray for her to make it home.” ---Booklist (Booklist)
“Known for her Amish romances and Texas-set contemporaries, Wiseman takes a plotline from a situation in her own life and creates an intense narrative about what happens when a woman chooses to follow her heart into a culture very different from her own. An inspiring reminder that God is always with us, even in the bleakest of situations. Recommended for fans of Malala Yousafzai's I Am Malala.” ---Library Journal (Library Journal)

Beth Wiseman not only writes great Amish fiction but she writes stories like this from the heart!
I bought this book believing it was Christian fiction. It is not. It gives the impression that whatever you believe is ok and that God is "on your side", just as long as you are somewhat religious and someone is praying for you.
If you can deal with that aspect of it, I recommend you check it out. I really enjoyed it as true FICTION, which is what it is.
Easy to read. Will make for a lively discussion. Not compelled to read anything else by this writer.
I could feel how tense the main character felt feeling unable to control her daily moves and the chill of her get away. Excellent.
