"Heather Blanton is blessed with a natural storytelling ability, an "old soul" wisdom, and a wide expansive heart. Her characters are vividly drawn, and in the western settings where life can be hard, over quickly, and seemingly without meaning, she reveals Larger Hands holding everyone and everything together." --Mark Richard, Executive Producer, AMC's Hell on Wheels, and PEN/Ernest Hemingway Award winner. "Every once in a while you find a book that doesn't seem to be just written by the author but through the author...as if something spiritual happens as the story unfolds." --Christine Fernandez, Amazon Reviewer "Every bit as good as the first book in this series, Lady in Defiance, Hearts in Defiance richly illustrates the principle of Romans 8:28. God does work all things out for good for those who love Him and are called to His purpose! These three sisters each have a compelling yet different story of how God is at work in their lives and how He uses them to lead others to Him. Most entertaining western fiction chock-full of Biblical principles! Heather Blanton's writing is realistic and refreshing." ---Janet Cody, Amazon Reviewer "Love, love, love Ms. Blanton's ability to weave a skillful tale that captures and carries you from her first words to the end. Compelling story of "Going West" and all that entails in the lives of these ladies in Defiance." --Author Diane Gates --This text refers to an alternate Paperback edition.
About the Author
Heather Blanton is the independent bestselling author of several Christian Westerns, including the Romance in the Rockies series, which has sold over 40,000 copies. Intrigued by the concept of three good sisters stranded in a lawless Colorado mining town, a few notable Hollywood producers have requested the script for her first book in that series, A Lady in Defiance. Heather's writing is gritty and realistic. In fact, her books have been compared to AMC's Hell on Wheels series, as well as the legendary Francine Rivers book, Redeeming Love. A former journalist, Heather is an avid researcher and skillfully weaves truth in among the fictional story lines. She loves exploring the American West, especially ghost towns and museums. She has walked parts of the Oregon Trail, ridden horses through the Rockies, climbed to the top of Independence Rock, and even held an outlaw's note in her hand. She writes Westerns because she grew up on a steady diet of Bonanza, Gunsmoke, and John Wayne movies. Her most fond childhood memory is of sitting next to her father, munching on popcorn, and watching Lucas McCain unload that Winchester! She can be reached several different ways: http://ladiesindefiance.com/ https://www.facebook.com/authorheatherblanton/?ref=hl https://twitter.com/heatherfblanton https://www.pinterest.com/heatherfblanton/ Christian Westerns is the genre that lets her write about strong pioneer women and men who struggle to find God and then live out their faith in real ways. Romance is always a strong element in her stories because it is such a beautiful gift from God, and a perfect reflection of how he loves His children: sacrificially and lavishly. Heather's stories aren't preachy or cheesy, but she hopes they are heart-warming, realistic, illuminating, and glorifying to God. Like good old fashioned Westerns, there is always justice, a moral message, American values, lots of high adventure, unexpected plot twists, and more than a touch of suspense. "I believe Christian fiction should be messy and gritty, because the human condition is ... and God loves us anyway." -- Heather Blanton

The main characters of Logan and Delilah/Victoria I just could not understand. Most of their actions were contradictory to what we knew about them. Logan continually told people of the peace he found in the Lord after his wicked past but he did not act like a man at peace. The entire story he continued to blame himself for EVERYTHING and said what a failure he was. He was never able to forgive himself. Delilah was extremely bad and her "reasons" for doing so just didn't add up. Their love for each other I simply did not buy, not based on how the two interacted with each other. Definitely NOT my idea of love.
There were also many plot points that were a complete re-hash of book one just with different characters.
I found the book to be bleak, the Christian message was lost and the characters I loved from the first two books were either hardly mentioned or they acted in ways I would not have expected.
After cleaning up so much of the evil vices that had been a part of Defiance since Charles McIntyre founded the town when he started his gold mine, the main characters are hopeful that Defiance will be incorporated and laws put in place to keep morals and peace. However, the evil characters who come there are truly evil, especially the owner of the new house of ill repute, a woman who calls herself Delilah, and comes with one of the worst personal grudges I have ever read about. She and her "silent" partner bring chaos to the town and threaten to destroy any hopes of ever changing Defiance's reputation as the worst, most immoral town in the West. But, even a beautiful woman who is willing to do such shockingly debased things is also loved by God. She also has a bitter story of growing up in an extremely bad situation.
Along with her, the handsome and loving new preacher also has had a bad time as a youth that made him known as a very cold blooded gunslinger among other things. Heather is such a great writer that the reader cannot help but fall in love with this truly humble, genuine man whose greatest desire is to serve the Lord and keep evil from overtaking this town he had once lived in while he was a very different man. Just as Heather's writing talents make the Preacher a great character the audience feels they know and love so well, she also makes the reader despise Delilah and other characters who are bent on destruction and getting revenge against the most innocent in town.
Hidden agendas and other circumstances that involve the entire cast of characters from her previous novels combine for an explosive ending. On the cover, Heather says that choices have consequences - the concept that choices by unsaved people as well as saved people, who are not perfect until they are in heaven and still sin on a daily basis, affects others in ways that are obvious but also many times ways that are not obvious. In the book she ties in her theme and the biblical truth that people who don't know Christ and those who do know Him are all vulnerable to acts of sin that can become very destructive. Just because most of our major characters in this story are Believers, each one of them as well as Believers today, are still sinners who must guard their thoughts and actions with prayer and total dependence on God's grace through His gift of Jesus Christ's death on the cross. Sin always has some kind of consequence, no matter how big or small and leads us to learn and grow in our relationship with Jesus. Heather means what she says which leads to an end that will shock her fans but also shows the true sacrifice of Jesus; and how if we truly believe in Him and His word, genuine Christians must be willing to sacrifice everything for their Savior and to bring others to know Him.
I was given this book for free in exchange for my honest review.
For me, I enjoyed all three books and they are intertwined so it is helpful to read them in order to follow the storyline. The third and final book seemed very powerful to me with the way it highlighted many facets of God’s character and the depravity of mankind. I loved how I saw the truth of one giving one’s life for a friend even when at first that person doesn’t even understand the depth of that type of love. Plus the characters sometimes had a hard time understanding God’s love.
Heather Blanton has authored other novels as well that some time I may read. I do know that I enjoyed seeing the three sisters that the audience meets in book one become some awesome godly women of the West. I hope you make time to read and enjoy this western series that is unlike others I have read. My hope is that anyone who reads this series will come to see that no one is beyond the love or reach of God!
