The Promise of the Land: A Passover Haggadah Paperback – February 3, 2020
Purchase options and add-ons
From the unassuming matzah that reveals the simplicity of earth, wheat, and water, to the first fruits of the soil that the Israelites offered in gratitude, the earth has always been at the center of who we are as a people.
Passover marks the Jewish people's liberation from slavery in Egypt and the coming of spring. Yet it is also a story about land and the natural world. All our biblical holidays - Passover included - originally commemorated the agrarian and pastoral soil of of which Judaism grew.
This haggadah keeps the earth at the forefront of our minds. In addition to all the traditional blessings and rituals, it includes sidebars and other features that uncover the connections between the seder and the land.
For instance, karpas symbolizes the vibrant, verdant energy of spring, and reminds us that, like plants, we are born of the earth. Dayeinu is seen as a commentary on appreciating what we have and avoiding waste and overconsumption.
Stunning artwork enhances the moods and themes of the seder in warm tones that are at once vibrant and earthy.
"A marvelous new contribution in an ecological vein . . .a haggadah in the spirit of Abraham Joshua Heschel" --Rabbi Jonathon Seidel, PhD, spiritual leader of Or haGan, Eugene Oregon

- Reviewed in the United States on April 7, 2024In today’s world, this Haggadah sees the beauty of our land, our seas, our plants, our animals, and our whole planet through the lens of the Passover story. Given our current state of climate chaos, it provides insight and hope building on the telling of that story.
- Reviewed in the United States on April 19, 2023The title of this Haggadah might put you off if you think that it's going to be a Zionist or nationalist tome. On the contrary, it is ecological and universalist, while remaining true to the holiday's Jewish roots. The title was intended in the spirit of an ecological prophet like Wendell Berry. It is about the promise of land, of being aligned with what it takes to care for land, any land. This Haggadah's path to this bold reinterpretation of Passover is to restore top a passage quoted in the Haggadah two Biblical lines that spoke of the first fruits produced by the farmer, which were brought as tribute to the ancient Temple in Jerusalem on the holiday of Shavuot. By restoring the connection between Passover and Shavuot, Bernstein opens the possibility of re-envisioning our constricted relationship to land, filtered through capitalist commodification, to an ethic of responsible, organic farming and sharing. One of its boldest suggestions is giving children Afikomen presents that are related to this new relationship to food. I must also give a shout-out to the incredibly beautiful art of Galia Goodman, which makes this haggadah a feast for the eyes as well as for the mind and spirit.
- Reviewed in the United States on April 3, 2023THIS IS WHAT I WROTE TO RABBI BERNSTEIN DIRECTLY: Dear Rabbi, I just finished reviewing the haggadah as I prepare for the holiday and I had to write. The beautiful artwork caught my eye immediately, the theme and brief description we get on Behrman house and Amazon spoke to me, but in real life, in my hands and turning each page - I am beyond thrilled and looking forward to lead seder this year. I have never fully run the haggadah part of the seder being formerly married to a rabbi, so that was always his turf, but this year it's on me and I couldn't be more excited for the opportunity with this haggadah leading the way. Your quotes, thoughtful and thought provoking side bars, the clear font and type color choices, the art, it's perfect!! And the first kiddush text shaped as a goblet? Brilliant! Please pass on my awe and respect to your typesetter and page designers! Thank you, thank you, thank you! May you and yours have a beautiful holiday and may peace and health come to this eretz we are on in our lifetimes.
- Reviewed in the United States on March 24, 2022This Haggadah was presented by the author, Rabbi Bernstein, during an afternoon of alternative ways to celebrate Pesach. Rabbi Bernstein has written an ecologically focused Haggadah "grounding our narrative." She presents new thoughts, suggestions within the context of the traditional text. Her book highlights the new contributions with sidebars in a different color. They are clearly written and informative. The entire Haggadah is a joy to read. But, it is also a joy to view. Galia Goodman illustrated the text. As a "lifelong hiker" she felt the connection to the land. Her abstract artwork "reflects the long hiking trails" she has hiked. Her stylized animal portraits are delightful.
I recommend this Haggadah to everyone who is looking for a way to update their Seder and incorporate 21st century sensibilities about land, dirt and our fragile environment.
- Reviewed in the United States on February 11, 2021This is first of all a very beautiful haggadah to interact with. Like many haggadot, it has margin notes that enrich and offer an array of perspectives on the centered text. The illustrations are also absolutely beautiful.
If you are used to using the same haggadah every year and have become attached to certain material, you will want to read through this one first to get a sense of its shape - what it adds, and what it leaves out. It does not include all the material found in the Maxwell House version, for example. What it does is center the importance of the human being's relationship with the land, and gives many opportunities to experience that connection and reflect on it.
- Reviewed in the United States on March 3, 2022My family has been using the same traditional Haggadah for over 60 years. The Promise of the Land provides new insights and practices that may be easily blended into our traditional Seder - especially from an environment perspective. The layout and illustrations further enrich this Haggadah.
- Reviewed in the United States on February 28, 2020I've been hosting sedars for over fifty years, and have continually looked for a Haggadah that would fill the needs, interests, and passions, historically and emotionally, of the multi-generational friends and family that have gathered at our table. I finally found one Haggadah that will work for us all, Rabbi Ellen Bernstein's beautiful telling of "The Promise of the Land." I eagerly read each page, felt inspired by the stories, the explanations, and the drawings, and quickly ordered ten copies. I can't wait to share them this year.

- Reviewed in the United States on February 23, 2022I became aware of Rabbi Ellen Bernstein's beautiful new Haggadah in the course of searching for a speaker to address the relationship between Passover and ecological sustainability. I purchased Promise of the Land in advance of the event (for a Jewish women's group) and I am looking forward to learning directly from the author.
