Editorial Reviews

Review

"The story is sexy, intense and the best kind of dirty.  I was fully immersed and wasn't ready for it to end.  I wanted to make Nate my own." -Book Binge
***
"In her hands, topics that may feel heavy and at times, heartbreaking are crafted with a deft hand that is empathetic. Promise Me This, though very topical, is never sensationalized and that speaks to the author's thoughtful nature." -Literary Gossip
***
"When I want plenty of chemistry, a story that speaks to the heart, and a sexy good time, Christina Lee is the author on the top of my list. As always, Christina does a brilliant job letting the reader into her character's pain, and making you fall in love with them." -Stina Lindenblatt, author of the Lost in You series
***
"A romance worth reading. Add in the undeniable attraction, and it takes the book to the next level of reading pleasure. In plain language...this story is both swoony and HOT!" -Bookish Temptations
***
"This book was an emotional roller coaster. I'd go from chuckling to fighting tears to fanning myself (because it's a hot one) to wanting to rip a characters head off, to wanting to hug a character, but all through it I was loving every word." -Sub Club Books

Jessie works at Raw Ink, the tattoo place where we have met some of the characters from prior books. Her passion is photography. She has a great friendship with Nate but things changed when she gets a glimpse of him with another girl.
Nate is the good looking guy without tattoos or piercings which is not the kind of guy she's usually attracted too. Nate intrigues her and the more time they spend together the more she wants to know the real Nate. She wants to learn what makes him tick (yes, he's a ticking time bomb). She's willing to take the dark with the light.
Nate wants Jessie but with his background he's not sure he can have a healthy relationship with her. He can count on Jessie as a friend and they have good rapport together but more than that he's not willing to wish until they are stuck in a car on a road trip for too many hours.

I loved Whisper to Me and now I'm in love with Promise Me This. Jessie's a woman who's independent, smart, funny and an open book. Nate is the complete opposite. He seems funny and light but is hiding huge secrets. He's struggling with his desires and he's terrified of making the same mistakes his dad did. Jessie is able to break down his walls and she's there to help him through it. They were sweet together but also full of passion. I can I just say that I love their nicknames: Blue and Square. So awesome!! Although, a few times when he called her Blue, I wanted to yell "You're my boy Blue".
In regards to the secondary characters, I was happy to see Kai again. Bennett was there for Nate like a true friend. I felt sorry for Nate's mom and I was glad his brother wised up by the end.
I can't wait to see who's next in this series.

Promise me This is the fourth book in the Between Breaths series. Each book can be read as a standalone, and I have found with this series that this is really the case. Sometimes you get a mention or a cameo of a character from another one of the books but not very much. They basically all just live in the same city/world, but other than that each book is completely focused on the main characters. Which works out great for people that want to pick and choose which books they want to read or to read them out of order. You won’t be lost at all.

Promise Me This is the story of Nate and Jessie. They both work at the tattoo shop, but on the surface they seem like complete opposites. There were so many things I enjoyed of their dynamic. I liked that at first glance they each didn’t appear to be the kind of person the other would go for. Jessie likes her guys rough around the edges, slim and cut with tats galore. And Nate is anything but that, Jessie thinks that he lives up to her nickname for him after all, which is Square. Nate has always had a crush on Jessie but he keeps people at a distance because he doesn’t trust himself to not turn out like his father. Just the fact that he was so worried about treating women badly made me know that he was nothing like his father. Another thing I liked about the two of them, was that while Nate always kind of had a thing with Jessie, she never thought twice about him that way until she walked in on him with one of his hookups. It was like the veil had been lifted and she saw another side of him.

So much of their boding took place on a short trip they took together. I loved everything about this trip. I loved Jessie’s passion for photography and I really loved how Jessie started to peel back the layers and get to know Nate.

Here is Nate, Kai's cousin (from prior book), the player. What everyone doesn't realize is that he has a reason also for his ways, and they have to do with an abusive dad. He is terrified he is like his dad, and thus keeps things light. He makes friends with Jessie, a receptionist at the Raw Ink Tattoo studio, where some of the other characters (including Bennett from book 1) work. Their friendship is something he sees as his only healthy interaction with females. Then, that friendship develops into more and really throws him into turmoil. He is completely unable to deal with his family issues amid his desire to deepen his relationship with Jessie. The book is mainly about his coming to terms with that, putting into motion a cessation of denial and finally the beginning of healing for their whole family. Luckily for him, Jessie is pretty much without major issues and able to be a very earthy, solid and grounded person for him to cling to through all this, while still giving her what she needs.

I wasn't a fan of Kai's book unfortunately, but I really liked this one. All the books of this series incorporate some serious young adult issues, and each time the responses, fears and resolution are realistic for the age group. I admire this writer for that. As I noted in her biography this time, she apparently has a background in social work, which makes complete sense given the compassion and understanding she brings to her new adult writing. I very much enjoyed this book.

“We all have darkness and brightness inside of us. You won’t know exactly what you’re made of until you embrace all of it….”

I don’t know how she does it each time, but Christina Lee always manages to write these amazing set characters that you easily draw you in and get you wrapped up into their lives. Nate and Jessie, we’re the definition of opposites attract but they seem to fit together perfectly. Their story was grittier and sexier, than the previous books in the series, but it still held the same emotional impact.

Nate and Jessie were introduced in the previous books but you truly don't know much about them until now. The two shared a casual friendship, and even though the both found each other attractive, it wasn’t something either of them would have ever acted on. When Nate helps Jessie with a school project, the two get stuck together for a weekend. In that one weekend, things between them change and their attraction grows.

“It felt almost like she could see right inside of me. See all of my secrets. All of the ways I was keeping myself locked in a cage. It was like she was offering me the key to let myself out.”

Nate was someone who struggled with himself. On one side he had a rich, privileged, upbringing but his family life held dark secrets of anger and abuse at the hands of his father. Nate had kinkier sexual desires but he was so scared that his desires would cause him to hurt a girlfriend that he tried to not go give into those urges. He never wanted to become his father. So, he kept himself detached from most woman and relationships.

“I wanted to know him even more. Past the attraction, past the flutters in my stomach, I wanted to ask him what troubled him and then sooth any broken parts inside him.
