Review

A Promise for Miriam is written from the heart with great respect for the details of Amish life. A special treat is finding the setting to be near my home town of Cashton, Wisconsin. Vannetta Chapman's story will take you in and warm your heart as you read this delightful Amish romance novel.”
Kathy Kuderer, proprietor, Village Shops at Down a Country Road

A Promise for Miriam is an interesting read from beginning to end, with a heart-warming and delightful story of Plain people.”
Nora Knapik, Inn at Lonesome Hollow

“I thoroughly enjoyed Vannetta’s look at the Amish of southwestern Wisconsin. Her heroine, Miriam, rings with authenticity. The characters have realistic imperfections and encounter plenty of challenges to keep readers turning the pages. Vannetta’s hero, Gabriel, is multi-dimensional and well-crafted. It was a joy to witness his change of heart. I eagerly look forward to the next installment of the delightful Pebble Creek Amish series.”
―Mary Ellis, author of An Amish Family Reunion

“I found A Promise for Miriam to be a charming story. And, I was honored to be asked to answer many questions Vannetta had about the Amish after she read my first non-fiction book, Amish in Wisconsin. She sought authenticity in her writing, and I offered her my firsthand answers to her questions. I commend her for that honesty and accuracy.”
Richard Lee Dawley, Amish Insight, richarddawley.com

“Wow! And that still doesn't describe how wonderful A Promise for Miriam turned out to be. Vannetta did an awesome job pulling me into the lives of Miriam, Gabe, and Grace. I lived with them for a whole day―the amount of time it took me to read the book―and loved every minute of it.”
Ginger Solomon

“There is never a dull moment in this book. There are intertwining events that keep you guessing at all times. The characters became part of me. Their feelings became mine. I felt their challenges, joys, pains and successes. That is what a good book does for me. It satisfies me in all of these aspects.

“I am anxiously and impatiently waiting for the next book!! When you read a book in a day and a half, you know you have found the reading material that you enjoy and that is well written.”
―Karla Hanns, Karla-Hanns-Karla.blogspot.com

“A well written book that will pull you into reading one more chapter...and one more chapter.”
―Jo Huddleston, johuddleston.com

“I like this author, Vannetta Chapman, as she shows the humanness of an Amish community―not just the peculiarities derived from their faith and connecting lifestyle choices. There’s a struggle theme that’s true for all people, not only the Amish.”
Alan Daugherty, Angelkeep Journals

I've lived as widower, faced the grief while trying to begin a new life. The title suggests Miriam as protagonist, but men will relate to Gabe. He faces major life changes and responsibility. Girls will see Miriam as a committed career feminine gal with a family yearning. The 2 struggles attract. By author design, they merge in an Amish district. Little did they know it would touch the entire village of Cashton.
A great book for a mixed gender book reading group. His view-her take.

Tired of sympathetic stares (that REALLY happens), Gabe moves his daughter north, away from a sad ending. Heartache and problems follow the move, even for little Gracie. I like this author, Vannetta Chapman, as she shows the humanness of an Amish community--not just the peculiarities derived from their faith and connecting lifestyle choices. There's a struggle theme that's true for all people, not only Amish.

Find more subplots in this Pebble Creek story than stitch styles on a sampler. More barn scenes than bedrooms in this light romance. Blizzards to town council squabbles provide adventure and suspense.
The BEST Amish Christmas morning scene I've every read. And book 2's prologue and chapter one (printed after the glossary and discussion questions in this book) promises a second delightful Pebble Creek tale. I will pick it up too.

By the way, my (reviewer's) real-life second chance love and marriage thrives, thanks to God.

A Promise for Miriam is a must-read Amish romance! With its endearing characters, emotional storyline, and tender romance, A Promise for Miriam captured my heart and made me long for more of this special community and its wonderful residents! I can't wait to visit Pebble Creek, Wisconsin again in the pages of A Home for Lydia!

I highly recommend A Promise for Miriam, as well as the other novels in the Pebble Creek series!

I could not put this book down, and read it in two days! As others have said, I am a fan of Vanetta Chapman's fiction, especially the quilt mystery series. She has a beautiful writing style, and she knows how to weave a story well.

This was a love story that kept me on the edge of my seat, but it is also a look into the lives of a more fundamental Amish culture that eschews indoor bathrooms and gas stoves for a simpler life style. I found it fascinating to read, knowing the differences between the culture in this group, as compared to the culture depicted in Chapman's Shipshewanna quilt mysteries that are more "liberal" in their use of electricity.

In addition to the love story, the third "act" involves a Donald Trump-style businessman who tries to come in and exploit the people in the community for his own monetary gain. The descriptions of what he had in mind for the town made me laugh as they became so ridiculous, and contrary to the beliefs of the Amish people. The "Amish Arcade" and the description of the "Amish Abbey" were my favorites. I couldn't help but giggle at Gabe's reaction to this..."We're not Catholic!"

Chapman's use of imagery and her ability to allow the reader to feel what the character was feeling made my heart ache at times, and rejoice at others, which is testament to her ability to immerse a reader in the story.

I also loved the varying points of view, and the changing first person viewpoint. Most of the chapters were from Miriam's or Gabe's point of view, but some were from Grace, Gabe's daughter, giving us the child's account of what she was seeing in the story.

Gabe has lost his wife, and is trying to raise his daughter alone. They move to Pebble Creek to start over where our story essentially begins in earnest. Miriam is a teacher at Pebble Creek and has remained single much longer than other girls in the community. The interaction between Gabe and Miriam over Gabe's daughter is filled with tension that leaves the reader wondering if Miriam will end up kissing Gabe or walking away. There is another young man in the community that is also vying for Miriam's attention. This is a nice story and you would enjoy it!

A Promise for Miriam is the first book in the Pebble Creek Amish Series. Having read this and the following book, A Home for Lydia, I can tell you that each book can stand as a story on its' own.
In this story, Gabe is a widower who decides to take his daughter, Grace, to a new Amish community after his wife dies. It's all about possibilities, and also healing. Grace doesn't speak, and hasn't since her mamm died. Gabe hopes that this new home can give her a new beginning, and maybe himself too. Their story unfolds as father and daughter get used to their new home, community, neighbors and worship community.
The author weaves her knowledge and love for the Amish into her story with a natural rhythm that isn't forced. This book was a little gem of joy!

Vannetta Chapman has a unique voice in the world of Amish fiction. Her ability to portray Amish men and women as human beings, her daring to portray the clashes with the modern world and the challenges involved have truly won me over to reading Amish fiction. The growth of her storytelling, so wonderful in A Simple Amish Christmas, has become even deeper, richer and more complex.

The story of Gabe, Miriam and Grace is one many of us can relate to in our own lives. A Promise for Miriam is about hiding from the world's hurts and being coaxed out by love. The first in a new series by Chapman, this book is a promise to her readers to deliver a truly marvelous series of stories about an Amish community and its residents in Wisconsin. Can't wait for the next one!
