His younger sister, Tara is a barista and a few hundred miles away. While Lee is in enroute via bus, she inadverdantly witnesses what is the beginning of the ZomPoc. Tara is smart enough to vacate the area and wait for her brother. Once he arrives, they immediately leave since it appears the military is attempting to "contain" the incidint in their usual way. Lee Riker has every intention of keeping his promise, that means evading the men in black. Along the way they pick up Steve O, slightly mentally challenged but with enough wit to know there is something wrong and he definitel needs to leave. Especially since they begin to see exactly what the infected look like and how dangerous they can be. As they run, trying to stay ahead of the barriers and barricades being set up as fast as th National Guard, Home Land Security and the Men in Black they soon come to realize the virus will not be easily contained as a series of events asist it in jumping barriers. They are one step ahead of the government and the virus with only a brief glimpse and a few harrowiing episodes. The Promise is more about a brother and sister, both determined to keep the final wish of a dying parent, reconnecting, learning more about each other and finding that Steve O is a little more than he appears which is artistically hidden by his dress, speech and slight attention to detail for innane and sometime important information. The Promise is at the forefront of the story while the powers that be try to play down what is occuring with false stories and misleading information and the citizens go about their daily lives, angry or grumbling because their schedules are interrupted, witnessing what is happening around them yet not paying attention or wanting to see what is unfolding as the country slowly fights the inevitable. And that really makes this a far more realistic storyline than many of the ZomPocs out there.
This one starts with Leland, Lee Riker in Atlanta, Georgia. Lee is an Iraqi war vet who lost part of his left leg to an IED. Lee also has anger management issues. He's currently living in a shelter that caters to vets and will be leaving shortly to meet with his sister. Their mom died recently and he will be meeting with Tara, his sister, for the reading of the will. They will also receive their inheritance. An inheritance they don't have any idea about.
Lee's Dad was a drunk, but a mighty smart one. He sold patents for things he invented. How much they were worth neither Lee nor Tara know.
Charlie Noble is a Training Assistant for Dr. Professor Sylvester Fuentes, a Charlie Noble who will start the ball rolling for the attack of the undead. A fact he will know nothing about until he unwraps and peeks into a package for Professor Fuentes, a Fuentes will become a victim of those who started the whole mess.
Tara Riker, though college educated, works as a barista at Middletown University. The same school where Noble will start the ball rolling.
Tara is working this day when she sees a young male student with blood sluicing from a gaping neck wound stumbled from the elevator and landed face first on the floor not thirty feet in front of her. Acting on muscle memory while gaping past her customer at the gory spectacle she slid the coffee she had just made to a customer. That customer moved to see if she could assist the bloody student.
Not so Tara. Though she felt bad about not assisting she also knew something else was going on and she needed to leave right then. Without a word she grabbed he stuff and headed out not giving one thought for her job or anything else. She got to her smart car, got inside, and headed for home. Behind her people began falling to the undead.
Once Lee got to his sisters house she and he decided to head for the high school to see if they could figure out what was going on. They were met by a road block of National Guard and black clad soldiers. The black clad soldiers had no insignia or rank. Lee, being no dummy, knew these guys were mercs and wondered what in the hell mercs were doing with the National Guard. Lee and Tara were held and escorted to an underground bunker. Lee and Tara both are wondering if they would be getting out of the bunker alive. A bunker where hundreds of others were being held.
So begins a damned good read.
This one has Lee, Tara, Steve-O who they will meet later on in the story, those responsible for the undead, those that were killed by these men, a Lee and Tara who see first hand the undead and what they do, a Lee who finally gets a weapon, a shotgun, from a man who was attacked by the black clad soldiers, death, destruction and Lee Riker honoring the promise he made to his Mother.
Five Stars though this book is much different that the Cade Greyson books it does show just how the undead took over and how the inept Govt. thought to contain the uncontainable. Good read and am waiting for number two.
Meanwhile in Middletown, after a box was delivered by mistake to the lab at the University, a teaching assistant, Charlie Noble, decides to open the box and have it ready for Professor Fuenstes to see when he arrives. With that…the story begins…
I absolutely loved this story and look forward to reading more. The characters, Lee, Tara and a tag-a-long named Steve-O and yes, you had better say his name correctly, who adds so much to this story are likeable and well described. I found myself cheering, cringing and hoping they made it through this crazy world as the SHTF! The story is filled with hold your breath moments, edge of your seat excitement and “Holy Crap…look out” scenes that will have you turning the pages faster to find out what happens next! This is a thoroughly enjoyable and entertaining story written by an author who knows how to get your blood pumping as you read. This is a “must add to reading list" for anyone who enjoys a well written book and if you love the zombie genre, well then you have to read this one!
