The last person pawn shop owner Mia Russo expected to waltz in her shop door was Zeke McBride. He may still haunt her mind and have a reoccurring role in her dreams but after he broke her heart years earlier, she was done wishing he would do exactly what he was doing right now…coming back into her life. She only hoped she would be able to keep her walls up and her heart hardened. She wouldn’t be hurt by him twice.
Zeke knew he made a mistake when he left Mia. He knew it every day he woke up without her. But he was going to fix that, and along with figuring out what his latest targets were up to now, he would prove to her he was a different man than the one who left her once. He wouldn’t make that mistake twice. Now they just had to survive the danger around them and he would convince her to give him another chance. He just had to…
Would the years they spent together and the connection they once had get a second chance?
Oh, how I love a good lovers to enemies to lovers story. I also love a kick ass heroine and an alpha hero. A story that has all of those elements? Total. Win. Mia and Zeke’s story was the perfect balance of heat and action. I loved Mia’s tough as nails personality that makes a starring appearance in the very beginning but softens when it comes to Zeke. Speaking of him, when Ms. Hart has him walking into Mia’s shop? That goes down as one of my fave book scenes ever.Read more ›
There is a small mystery brewing here, but it takes a while to get to that as the first few chapters are focused on introducing her, then the town, and then her commanding officer/ex-boyfriend, Zeke.
These two have a love that burns hot, but they are both hot-headed, stubborn, and prideful. Mia has trouble trusting Zeke’s motives because he’s always been too tied to the job rather than her, or so she thinks.
Some things you should know:
*While this novella is part of a series, it is a true standalone. You don’t even need to know anything about previous characters because their parts are very small and the details given are just enough for the side characters that they are.
*In the beginning (and from the book description) you’re going to expect this story to dive into a big suspenseful storyline. It doesn’t. Other than a small (very small) subplot involving a music box that ends up in Mia’s possession, this story is solely about Mia and Zeke’s past, present and possible future. Though I have a feeling that the music box and what it contains will be playing an important role in future works. (Unlike what other reviews have said, this plot does not “just end”. It ends as it relates to Mia and Zeke.)
*I gave this novella four stars despite the lack of external plot because I felt that it was still written very well. This is an introspective story that focuses on the characters, which were both very well developed. The subplot was used to simply serve as a backdrop for these two and explain the many obstacles in what should otherwise be a perfect relationship.
Mia, short stuff, Sleeve of Tattoos, a purple streak in her hair and mean as a snake.
7 Years have ago Mia decides she has seen enough death, she gets out of the Undercover Cop Business and wanted Zeke to leave with her. They Love each other, maybe a little too much. Because when she tells Zeke, who is a total Alpha and the need to WIN at everything, he doesn’t see things the same way as Mia does.
Fast forward 7 years and Mia has made herself a home in Surrender by opening a Pawn Shop on the outskirts of town.
Zeke, now a Commander, sets up an Informant to get Mia to buy an Antique Music Box. Inside the box is a receipt for a new drug that everyone wants.
Zeke has known where Mia was the entire time they are apart, and that’s where the fun begins. As with all the books Liliana hart writes there is mystery, suspense. Snarky and witty Heroines are a trademark for this series and I love it. Can’t wait for the next MacKenzie Novel Troublemaker. I was happy just to get a peek at Cooper (swoon). Keep writing and I will keep reading.
You know right from the start that this book is going to be fast paces and hot as hell, Mia used to be a cop and now she owns a pawn shop, A biker and an ugly one at that comes in looking for a jewelry box, She tells him she has no idea what he is talking about although she has the box. I mean come on a biker and a jewelry box???? Yea right gotta be something up with that.
Next thing she knows her old hook up (boyfriend and partner) is there and that is one person she really did not want back in her life in any shape or form. Zeke is determined to win back Mia AND keep her safe as well as get that darn box all at the same time.
Grab this book and Hop on your hog and join in on this hot and fun ride! If you have read Lilliana Hart before you know she keeps you on your toes and and gets is all panting while giving us one of the best reads in a long time!
