The main characters Hana and Daud are newly weds and their Christian spirituality, humor, selflessness shine through. Daud's dangerous assignments create the suspense and I really enjoyed Avi's character. Hana's spiritual depth really challenges one to look for closely at our own relationship with God. Whitlow did an excellent job of showing the depth of her character and her willingness to devote time to a young child who has lost her mother.
If you don't read this Whitlow novel it will be your great loss! Hoping that Whitlow is working on the third series to this one as he did leave things open at the end for another one. Loved the name of Hana and Daud's first son!
•Characters actively living out their Christian faith, expressing faith and hope built on the Word of God, on personal encounters with the Holy Spirit, on words of encouragement/ prophecy from others, and living morally according to their belief system.
•No foul language nor immorality.
•No sexually inappropriate content
•Lots of fluff-- the names of every dish they are on multiple occasions. I wondered if the author just wanted to show how much he knew about Middle Eastern food or if he just had a yearning for tabouleh and baklava.
•Too much telling instead of showing. The lawyers actions and choices can tell me how sophisticated she is. Ironically, although he mentions her sophistication, she often makes foolish and childlike choices. Like what woman picks a house to buy and sets her heart on it while her husband is in another country without consulting him at all, then had the gall to be disappointed that he's not gushing over it?
•Too much insignificant conversation.
"This Year Jerusalem!"
All the characters in each book are introduced in “Chosen People” and the story continues in “Promise Land”. The characters are so well developed to the point they became more than just characters in the story, they truly become people you love and care for. I loved the relationship between Hana & Sadie! I loved the descriptions through the book of the cultures and peoples of Israel and Palestine and the thrilling intrigue through each book? There are lots of high risk situations and good and bad choices with certain characters that will keep your stomach tied up in knots and on the edge of your seat!!
These two books are 2 of my favorite all time favorites! I keep trying to figure out if there is a still a 3rd book to come in this series! I’m praying there is!!!
