"Spirited, thorough, and thunderously foreboding." --Kirkus Reviews
For the first time, the full, explosive record of the unthinkable: how a US president compromised American foreign policy in exchange for financial gain and covert election assistance.
Looking back at this moment, historians will ask if Americans knew they were living through the first case of criminal conspiracy between an American presidential candidate turned commander in chief and a geopolitical enemy. The answer might be: it was hard to see the whole picture. The stories coming in from across the globe have often seemed fantastical: clandestine meetings in foreign capitals, secret recordings in a Moscow hotel, Kremlin agents infiltrating the Trump inner circle...
Seth Abramson has tracked every one of these far-flung reports, and now in, Proof of Collusion, he finally gives us a record of the unthinkable--a president compromising American foreign policy in exchange for financial gain and covert election assistance. The attorney, professor, and former criminal investigator has used his exacting legal mind and forensic acumen to compile, organize, and analyze every piece of the Trump-Russia story. His conclusion is clear: the case for collusion is staring us in the face. Drawing from American and European news outlets, he takes readers through the Trump-Russia scandal chronologically, putting the developments in context and showing how they connect. His extraordinary march through all the public evidence includes:
-How Trump worked for thirty years to expand his real estate empire into Russia even as he was rescued from bankruptcy by Putin's oligarchs, Kremlin agents, and the Russian mafia.
-How Russian intelligence gathered compromising material on him over multiple trips.
-How Trump recruited Russian allies and business partners while running for president.
-How he surrounded himself with advisers who engaged in clandestine negotiations with Russia.
-How Trump aides and family members held secret meetings with foreign agents and lied about them.
By pulling every last thread of this complicated story together, Abramson argues that--even in the absence of a report from Special Counsel Mueller or a thorough Congressional investigation--the public record already confirms a quid pro quo between Trump and the Kremlin. The most extraordinary part of the case for collusion is that so much of it unfolded in plain sight.

Abramson begins with a description of the Trump family's dealings with Russia over the last thirty years, continues with increasing details through Trump's activities prior to and during his campaign, and then dissects his, his family, and his accomplices' behavior through the first eighteen months or so of his Administration. Reading through each chapter (which are all accompanied by summaries and annotations enhancing the primary narratives) it becomes increasing clear that Trump committed treason and other high crimes and misdemeanors, actions which in other eras would have been sufficient to keep him from the Presidency, or to have brought his Presidency to an end within weeks if not days of his swearing in.
It is difficult to find a chapter or indeed a page or paragraph which is not "troubling" to concerned Americans, but I must say that for me the most disturbing chapter is the Afterword: "The Death And Rebirth Of America." Here Abramson makes predictions of how Trump and his accomplices are likely to react in the coming weeks and months as Mueller concludes his investigation, the Democrats take control of the House and begin their own inquiries, and the behavior of the Oval Office's chief occupant and his helpers becomes increasingly erratic. I was especially struck by this sentence on page 318: "How one stood on the question of Donald J. Trump at this moment in American history will be the defining feature of many Americans' self-identity as citizens for years to come." I know where I stand.

Do not hesitate in purchasing ahead of Seth's next book due in August 2019.
It's most significantly NOT filled with the author's personal opinion, but instead one of the most deeply researched publications you might ever read. Yes it is complex - but the author takes great care in breaking down the presented information.
Each chapter starts with a short "summary" for a quick explainer, then chapters progress to what is referred to as "The Facts" (with each paragraph having at least one reference - and as often as every sentence), finally you will discover an "Annotated History" which will more deeply explore the key points unearthed in the facts. I personally found this startegy in presenting such complicated threads of discussion incredibly helpful and efficient.
Added to this, of course, is the towering number of factually based references and notes. In the hardcover version, this amounts to just over 100 pages. This packed with Web URL's where you can locate the source articles and share far and wide with your networks. With the rest of the book totalling around 300 pages, it's immediately obvious Seth does not at all waffle on and on, and truly keeps the content as concise as possible and sticks with verifiable facts.
The content itself can now often be found in breaking stories in the media. Seth has most often been among the first to share these in his Twitter feed, but for some folks the longer form method of THREADING (as many as hundreds of tweets) a book form might feel a more appropriate way to consume the presented information. Again these have vastly been sources from reputable media sources, journalists, and whistle blowers. And there is a wide variety of these from just as equally wide across the political spectrum.
I've now pre-ordered his new book, Proof of Collusion, and I can not wait for release day! As news stories, and politics itself, are heading into these same geographical regions of influence - Seth Abramson is your contact reluctantly with his finger on the pulse of this dynamic and stressful topic. He provides a great service to lay people, like me (and perhaps yourself). I wholeheartedly applaud his efforts, and somewhat unique in the field, his metamodern communicative style.
