It was to the point where the only shoe-like objects she could manage were backless bedroom slippers (zero support) or cheap tennis shoes that had pieces cut out to accommodate sore, swollen areas of the foot.
One day she handed me one of those "mail order" ads you'll find in the many "penny savers" or coupon books or cheesy catalogues targeting miracle products to seniors. It was for a pair of plush slippers whose primary claim to "comfort for bad feet" was an adjustable Velcro flap upper and some fake fur. All this for only $9.99! So I did 5 minutes of research on the mail order marketer and came up with a BBB non-rating and dozens of angry reviews from people who felt ripped off whether the product actually arrived (rarely) or did not (mostly).
A few more moments searching keywords Old. Painful. Feet. brought me to Propét.
The order through Amazon arrived, as always, on time or better. And I prepared myself for mom's potentially underwhelmed reaction (as she's rather picky receiver of gifts and, well, no fake fur on the uppers). She has worn them every day since and had proclaimed the shoe and its maker the best things since The New Deal.
A key suggestion of many Amazon reviews that I followed: order 1 or at least 1/2 size up [she insisted she was an 8 to 8-1-2 so I ordered 9 and they fit perfectly]. The adjustable closures top-and-heel allow for effortless on/off by users or caregivers, and can act as fine-tune fit adjustments, too.
Also, while fashion had no priority in this purchase, the shoes aren't nearly as ugly and/or "orthopedic" looking as I assumed they would be. On the contrary. They look like a quality casual loafer, tasteful and simple.
I got her the tan (sand?) pair and will likely back them up with a black pair just to round-out her wardrobe options.
This is a wonderful product.
