Kahlil Gibran: full Arabic name Gibran Khalil Gibran, (January 6, 1883 – April 10, 1931) was a Lebanese-American artist, poet, and writer of the New York Pen League.

Kahlil Gibran was born in the town of Bsharri in the Mount Lebanon Mutasarrifate, Ottoman Empire (north of modern-day Lebanon), to Khalil Gibran and Kamila Gibran(Rahmeh). As a young man Kahlil emigrated with his family to the United States, where he studied art and began his literary career, writing in English and Arabic. In the Arab world, Gibran is regarded as a literary and political rebel. His romantic style was at the heart of a renaissance in modern Arabic literature, especially prose poetry, breaking away from the classical school. In Lebanon, he is still celebrated as a literary hero.

He is chiefly known in the English-speaking world for his 1923 book The Prophet, an early example of inspirational fiction including a series of philosophical essays written in poetic English prose. The book sold well despite a cool critical reception, gaining popularity in the 1930s and again, especially in the 1960s counterculture. Gibran is the third best-selling poet of all time, behind Shakespeare and Laozi.

My favorite book since I was a tenth grade student. My camp counselor read it to us, one subject a night, and we discussed it. It is a poetry book. I loved the poems. The topics are on love, friendship, marriage, and other subjects such as children. This book has meant much to me as I've gone through life. I am now 71 years old, and I gave copies of this book to my granddaughter and to my brother for their birthdays. You may think you don't like poetry, but you will love this book. I promise.

Here is something from the poem on children:

"Your children are not your children.
They are the sons and daughters of Life's longing for itself.
They come through you but not from you,
And though they are with you yet they belong not to you.
You may give them your love but not your thoughts.
For they have have their own thoughts.
You may house their bodies but not their souls,
For their souls dwell in the house of tomorrow, which you cannot visit, not
even in your dreams.
You may strive to be like them, but seek not to make them like you.
For life goes not backward nor tarries with yesterday."

The 1st book of spirituality, other than the Bible and Book of Mormon i read was Be Here Now. Since then i became one of Paramahansa Yogananda's disciples and now i recognize the divinity in All. Chuck Hilling says it all with fewer words. As Maharaji-ji always said " Sub-ek. (it's all One). Now i mostly read to listen to the music.

I first read The Prophet back in the 1970's, and recently was asked to read the chapter on marriage at my daughter's wedding. I bought four of these books and gave them as Christmas gifts. Gibran relates life as we all want it to be.

The book was absolutely beautiful and the person I gave it to for Christmas was thrilled - it was definitely a successful gift! I also really appreciated how nicely it was wrapped when it arrived

I think this must be my third or fourth copy of this book. I lend them to people then forget where they have gone, I am sure they are inspiring others as much as the thoughts do me. A book to dip into, pick up one relevant idea and think about it for a while. Deep and enriching.

I have purchased this book more than a dozen times over the last few decades and gave my copy away just as many times. On this occasion I saved myself the work of giving my copy away and then buying a new one for myself and just had the book sent directly to my friend. A perfect gift for many occasions.

This book is probably sufficiently well-known not to need another review. It's a great piece of writing that far excels the Bible in clarity and straightforward philosophy, and furthermore, would not foment factional followers and fanaticism.
