In this expansion of his dissertation, Dr. Alan Bandy elaborates on the prophetic lawsuit genre in Scripture. In such cases God serves as both prosecutor and judge in the investigation of his own people and/or other nations. After considering the relevant evidence, he renders a just verdict so that people receive what they deserve. Bandy sees Rev. 1:9-3:22 as a covenant lawsuit concerning God's people, 4:1-16:21 as God's suit against the nations, and 17:1-22:5 as the world's final judgment and the church's ultimate vindication. He notes how the phrase "in the Spirit" marks major structural divisions and changes of location, corresponding as well to the various aspects of the lawsuit. The scene in the heavenly throne room installs Jesus as eschatological Judge who is authorized to disclose the contents of the scroll, i.e., the judgments seen in the remainder of the book. Bandy does an admirable job of explaining the situation which faced the early church, which impacts the proper understanding of Revelation's message. Even those unfamiliar with koine Greek should have little difficulty following the thesis. Of the considerable volumes I have read concerning Revelation, this one ranks among my favorites.
