I don't have a degree in history, I'm an engineer and like many of the people who will read this book, it was an eye opener. History and religion, at least in my end of the world, are largely presented as fact and your task as a student is to memorized dates and places as though these are hard proven facts. The author's scientific approach to his research showed that much of what is presumed to be fact is at best just hypothesis. I enjoyed his approach in that he presents countless sources of written reporting on tombs, monuments, temples and papyrus scrolls scattered up and down the length of the Nile river. It does provide a much more testifilable source of history to me than countless years of stories handed down around the evening camp fire which later become the foundation for so much of the Old Testament and the Koran.
I highly recommend this book for anyone interested in Egyptian history and the beginnings of many modern religious ideas. It is extremely well researched and footnoted. What I like the most was the author's style. He didn't start with a conclusion or theme but rather he takes you on a journey of scientific discovery and lets you draw your own conclusions based on the evidence. For myself, I am left with a much better understanding of today's religions and the tremendous role Egypt played in the history of the world. It has driven me to do a lot more research into the history of Egypt and the 3000 years of Dynastic rule of the Pharaohs.
You will not be sorry; your knowledge of the pivotal points of spiritual history will increase a 1000 fold.
