Drive Genius 2
- Disk defrag - optimizes the drive, then combines all the empty free space together into one contiguous block. This in turn improves the overall speed and performance of the drive
- Directory repair, repartition on-the-fly, device/volume cloning, integrity testing, benchmarking, secure erase and several other tools to help maintain your hard drive
- Your hard drive should be defragged every 2 months or so. If you are working with smaller files (Microsoft Office, emails) you should run defrag every 3 to 4 months
- OS X only optimizes files under 20MB. It also only optimizes the files not the drive, so even though the smaller files are optimized there can be empty space in between the files themselves. Drive Genius 2 has the ability to optimize the drive, by putting all pieces of the file together
- Able to repartition your hard drive 'on-the-fly' (no need to reformat the hard drive) allowing you to add, delete, hide or expand partitions live.

Is your Mac running slower? You probably need to defrag your drive. Although OS X optimizes the files in the Mac, it doesn't optimize the drive itself. Drive Genius 2 has the ability to defrag, directory repair and repartition on-the-fly. This is the same product used by Apple at the Genius Bar to defrag your drive (Part of the ProCare program offered by Apple). This software makes hard drive maintenance tasks painless, fast and easy. So prevent disaster by using Drive Genius 2 to maintain your computer.

Well, I bought DRIVE GENIUS 2 solely for it's 'repartition' capability. Sadly, it does not do this task very well, at least for me. There are limitations and caveats not advertised but which are a reality. Basically, the 'repartition' process takes a long time , a real long time. And, you have to 'shift' the data on the partition to a counterclockwise location prior to attempting the repartition to gain access to the newly freed space. In my case, I had a 500GB external drive with four partitions. I wanted to expand one partition. It was not a pleasant experience. Perhaps I'm not doing it correctly. All I know is I had to shift the data on all four partitions and after the repartition attempt I did not end up with any appreciable free space. This 'utility' was a disappointment.
The other disk maintenance abilities of DRIVE GENIUS 2 (and I did not try them all) appear acceptable. They are listed on the brochure and I need not repeat here. I will note that I found the 'defragmentation' utility useful. It worked as advertised.
The support group got back to me after about a week after I first wrote them. One message was moderately sympathetic and another can best be described as unhelpful, even critical of the user. "Drive Genius is an award-winning utility", has over 15,000 users, etc., so what's wrong with you? At no point did they suggest taking back the software that I clearly stated I would not be using again, or otherwise offering to appease the unhappy customer (me). This is not very good customer service.
It got to about 35% and signalled "Done." I knew it couldn't be, so I set it again to defrag. It said it couldn't, as the drive is corrupted! Something about an overlap. It now can't mount the boot drive, so the computer won't boot from its hard drive. I booted from the Disk Warrior 4.1 CD, but it was unable to correct the problem. Now I've booted from the TechToolPro 4 CD, but it doesn't look like it's going to work either. Intel iMac 20, OS 10.5 with the latest updates...
We have not seen any issues of this nature in our testing or in normal operation. We do note that file system corruption can cause problems with any disk management tool, so it's suggested to first back up your data before you defragment your drive and also we suggest that you run the Repair utility to Verify the drive before you defragment the drive to make sure the drive is free of any file system faults.
We do apologize for the inconvenience that you experienced, however we'd like to note that the defrag tool is used many thousands of times without fault, and Drive Genius has also won numerous software awards, so it is a world-class tool.

For reference I did run the verify utility before running defrag. After a few months the pain of that experience faded and I needed to defrag my primary disk on another iMac in our home. I run verify, all ok, then defrag. DEFRAG FAIL AGAIN and CORRUPTED the disk. Now I'm in the process of doing a total system restore. After running the Mac utilities to reformat the hard drive no errors were found. I'll leave the final conclusion up to you. In my opinion, this product does not work and product support is worthless.
