Editorial Reviews

From the Author

To Protect & Serve is a strange duck when you try to put it into a genre category of Christian versus inspirational romance.  The first of The Courage Series, "To Protect & Serve" is by far the least Christian of the three.  Sometimes that happens in my series work--we start with characters who are not fundamentally Christian in their approach to the world, but as the series goes, we move that direction.  That is the case with To Protect & Serve.  Some even question the moniker "Christian Romance Novel," commenting that the Christian part doesn't show up until the end.  That is very true, and for good reason.  Both of the main characters are operating for most of the book on their own strength and wisdom--not God's.  It is only when they come up against untenable trials and personal core issues that their hearts begin to change. So don't expect full-on Christianity from this one--just two lost people trying very hard to find something to grab onto in a dangerous and emotionally difficult world.

This is the first review of a book I've written, so bear with me. I did enjoy the book, but I do believe it was a little over-dramatic in that the characters were so unbelievably stubborn and hard-headed. There was some repetition as some of the other reviews have stated. Lisa, in particular, was in such denial of her feelings toward Jeff that it just seemed a little unreal.

However--my two biggest issues were the drinking and the swearing. In a "Contemporary Christian" book, I would not expect to find the two characters meeting in a bar, even if neither really wanted to be there. Then later in the story, Jeff is offered a beer by his buddy, Dustin, and we assume he takes and drinks it...even the brand name was in the book. If this was a story about an alcoholic overcoming his addiction, I would understand the usage, but this was more like "social drinking." In addition, both characters say "D--- it" one time each in the book. EXTREMELY disappointing. I understand anyone can swear when under extreme pressure (or not), but did that really have to be printed in the book? They couldn't have said "Darn it" or "Shoot" or Rats"?

Please don't misunderstand me. I don't want to judge anyone if you drink or swear or anything else. That is not my place. However, Christians are called to be holy as Jesus is holy and we are to be set apart from the world. Except for the section others have mentioned where Lisa is listening to a preacher on the radio talk about stepping out of the boat and keeping your eyes on God, God doesn't play a major role in this book (besides being called upon when people are in trouble or are very worried).

I love Staci Stalling's books!!! As usaual, when reading one by her, I lose a lot of sleep. As an author myself, I don't get much time to read much anymore, so I usually lay in bed and read 30 minutes to an hour right before going to sleep. Well, many a night while reading, To Protect & Serve, I thought... just one chapter, I'll read just one more tonight. Then pretty soon it was... okay, just one more. Before I knew it, it was one or two in the morning and five or six chapters later because, To Protect & Serve, is that captivating!

I won't go into the details of the story as others have already done that, but I will tell you, however, that this is more than a fabulous romance story. The lessons in this novel were mind-blowing and fantastic! Especially the one about stepping out of the boat, and the one about taking one step at a time. If you want to know what I'm talking about, you'll have to purchase the book. You won't be sorry you did, because Staci Stallings is a very gifted and talented writer. Her style is fresh and unique and very enrapturing. With each one of her stories, I'm taken away to another world, a world I want to be a part of and never leave. Her characters are real with real every day problems. I love that.

Oh, and the firemen in this story, they're smokin' hot! Especialy the hero!!!

Can't wait to get my hands on more books by this author.

Wow, another fabulous story by Staci Stallings! Staci has a true talent for keeping the reader totally engrossed in her story, because her stories are always true to life, and her characters are people just like you and me. This is an awesome story about trust, something all of us struggle with in everyday life! Trust in yourself, trust in other people in your life, and most importantly, trust in the Good Lord!! It is an awesome love story that gives us all hope that with God in our lives, we can make those hard decisions and trust that God will take care of us. Another must read by Staci!!

This is another great read by Staci Stallings! Staci works magic in her ability to weave a story that keeps you interested from page one. You can always be certain that her stories will be inspiring as well as entertaining. There is romance of the purest and sweetest kind. There is enough suspense to keep you up late at night because you can't put the book down until you see what happens next. And, then there is always that important ingredient that makes her books special. She shows how we need to quit going through life on our own power and learn to trust that God will hold us up. If I could, I would give this book 10 stars! Truly an extraordinary book that I will read more than once and will recommended to everyone I see.

I really enjoy staci stallings books but for some reason this one just wasn't that great. Lisa's continued attitude of "I don't know if I can handle a guy who's a fire fighter" drove me nuts. Seriously to question a bit is fine but the questions last the whole book....enough already!!!

I will read more of Ms Stallings books bc I like them but I don't think I will read anymore of the serve and protect series.

I appreciate that this book is full of Christian values and the characters both showed a faith in God. However, the plot was slow and awkward. For the first half of the book I couldn't stand the heroine. I couldn't relate to her at all. She was a man hater, very success oriented and egotistical. The hero wasn't my favorite either. He was painted so quiet and shy, I couldn't see how any kind of relationship between them would begin let alone last to the end of the book. Not my kind of main characters at all. Plot and character problems aside, there were so many grammatical mistakes that it drove me crazy! I constantly had to fill in incomplete sentences in my mind or reword them to make them make sense. It was annoying and detracted from the story. I'm not an English major or anything, and generally let some typo's slide, but when the sentence structure is clearly disjointed and confusing, it gets on my nerves. I can only assume that the editor was distracted and didn't actually read the book before sending it to print.

I'm currently reading a different book by this same author (Dreams by Starlight) and enjoying it much more. I don't know what happened with "To Protect & Serve" but it really wasn't worth reading. By the time I was half way through I couldn't wait to be done with it. I'm not sure why I stuck it out to the end. Nothing else to read I guess.
