Important Note: Protecting Sam was originally released within the Special Forces: Operation Alpha Kindle World. When the KW program shut down, I republished Protecting Sam as the first book in my new Sanctuary series. The story hasn't really changed much from the original; the only difference is that references to Susan Stoker's characters have been removed and replaced with references to my Callaghan Brothers.

Sanctuary is a contemporary romance / romantic suspense series featuring a team of former Navy SEALs intent on creating a place where men and women returning from active duty service can re-acclimate to civilian life.
Each book is a story in itself, and focuses on a different team member. You don't need to read book 1 to read and enjoy book 2, but it is highly recommended as the stories take place in chronological order and small town drama continues throughout the series.

Protecting Sam drew me immediately for 2 reasons: the heroine's name is Samantha (best name EVER) and it was part of Susan Stoker's Kindle World which I have enjoyed immensely.

Samantha has a stalker but the police aren't able to do anything. They don't quite take her seriously. So, she does the best she can to live her life. Her hot new ex military neighbor makes things interesting for sure! Steve/Smoke is in town to help his buddies build a retreat for veterans and can tell right away something is up with his neighbor.

The plot is good but nothing earth shattering. Some of it was a little convoluted but I think that could be because its a novella and things weren't really as fleshed out. Overall, this book was good. I liked Sam and Steve but I don't really think I felt a great deal for them.

Sam has just moved into this apartment after hers was broken into. She has been receiving notes and flowers and the cops feel this is not threatening. Steve has left the seals and is now moving into the apartment across from Sam. Church has a renovation program that Steve is still deciding on whether or not to get involved in.
The more he observes of his neighbor's behavior, he knows something is up with her. She is scared. He starts following her. She works at the coffee shop so he goes in every morning and purchases coffee and food for the guys. While observing her, he notices a man watching her and when he finds the footprints outside her window, he definitely knows something is up. They are starting to get close and he will do whatever he needs to do to protect her and knows his team will back him up. Sam has come up missing. He has to find her.

Where There’s Smoke There’s Fire!

This saying is true in several ways in this book, though you will just have to read it to see how! Steve “Smoke” Tannen has just moved next door to Sam and soon discovers that she has a stalker. Being the protective Seal that he is, he decides to watch over her discretely. Sam isn’t your typical simpering damsel in distress though. She is a tough, independent woman, which is a refreshing change from most stories. I loved the way the author made both of these characters real. Steve wasn’t just a macho, alpha in your face character, he was a bit skittish about getting into a relationship however he still treated Sam with care and respect. I also loved the reference to the Callaghan brothers and am hoping they are included more as the series develops. The secondary characters in the story were all intriguing and I can’t wait to hear their stories. This book had it all, suspense, romance and action and I enjoyed every minute of it. Abbie Zanders never fails to entertain that’s for certain. Pick this one up, you won’t be disappointed.

Smoke/Steve and Sam: Sizzling and Special

Protecting Sam was a fabulous read. I expected it to be cliche'd (Girl has a stalker, girl meets big, burly Alpha dude, Alpha dude rescues damsel in distress and kicks stalker's tail, cue HEA.) It did follow along those lines but it was sweet and respectful the way the Alpha dude, Steve, handled Sam's stalker issue. Steve displayed enough chinks in his armor to be a very realistic character. Sam, while skittish and scared about her stalker, isn't wimpy and only simpers to her big, strong man. She held it together, kept getting up when she got knocked down, fought for her dream, told off jerks who needed it and treated a mentally ill man with compassion while he was holding her hostage. The concept of the resort in this story is a great idea that should be implemented in the real world.There was enough suspense to keep the reader on the edge of his/her seat, enough sparks and sexy times to heat up your e-reader and enough romance to leave you saying, "Aww! What a HEA ending.". My only suggestion for Ms. Sanders: write more stories about the other guys in the book, QUICKLY please. I'm dying to know what happens next.

Steve is your typical ex-SEAL, protective, alpha hero, and Sam is a sweet, tough, honest, baker, leading lady with a terrifyingly nasty stalker problem. Unsure of emotional entanglements, Steve senses her fear and steps in to save the day leading her to some mixed messages. With the help of his ex-SEAL team brothers and some mysterious hacker help, they vanquish the evil forever. Four stars because even though the story had a very sweet HEA, I would've liked Sam to have been totally exonerated in the town's eyes, which only partially happened. This way there will always be gossip and maybe distrust, about her. Oh well, I guess you can't have everything. A great new series.

This book was good it's about a ex Navy Seal named Steve "Smoke" Tannen who just moved into the apartment next door to Samantha "Sam" Appelhoff who wants to have her own bakery. Smoke moved here because his Navy Seal friend Matt "Church " Winston had a new business venture he wants Smoke help with. Sam had been receiving flowers and letters to her job and her car windshield. But the someone break-in to her old place she couldn't prove it and the cops said there was no crime in send flowers and nice letters and no threat made there's nothing they can do. Her new place was break-in to and flowers was on her dresser in her bedroom. She got into a disagreement with her boss and the bakery ended in flames. The cops and fire department think she did it because her grandparents bakery had ended in flames too but she was not there and she didn't have any one with her. Sam has a stalker and the cops didn't believe her but Smoke and his team do. To find out what happens in this story Read the book.

Great start to a new series involving seals returning to civilian life. Liked both main characters smoke and Sam but wish that she’d been a bit more consistently feisty. Few little things that went unresolved around the fires and fire chief but overall liked it and will read next one, not as good as the Callaghan’s but could get there.
