When I read that they would finally get their own book, I was beyond excited. Then I read that it would be a three man tirade (spelling) Javi, Saul and someone named Kyle......what the what. I'm so not a fan of books when there are three main characters involved in the relationship, someone always gets shafted (no pun intended). That's exactly what happens with the Protector. What started out as two men loving each other with no end or limit, Javi and Saul, become Saul and Kyle loving each other with no end or limit and all over each other, with no Javi in sight.
I really wanted to like this book but I was left wanting more. I understand where Kyle and Saul worked and loved and loved some more but there just seemed to be no room for Javi, the man they were all ready "to die for". He was made to seem childlike and someone who needed to be cared for, almost like a burden and not someone that these men were in love with.
There was constant talk by Saul about being sorry for having to give most if not all of his time to Javi, like he regretted being with him. However the reader NEVER saw these moments of the two men together. It was always Saul and Kyle connecting and finding their time and space. Javi would usually be sleeping or just not mentioned at all.
I feel like their needs to be another book that just focuses on Javi and his recovery and finding love and happiness, since there was non of that in The Protector. Kyle and Saul got their HEA but Javi, yeah no.
Javi's character touched my heart and made me cry - he is beautiful, but as the triad progressed, he seemed to be forgotten about quiet a lot. His special first moment with Saul was never really touched on in detail in the story, but just mentioned in a sentence. I was disappointed that Javi never got the chance to really stand up for himself and face the person responsible for what had happened to him in his past. I think more time could have been spent on the love and growing between Saul and Javi before ever introducing Kyle into the mix. I actually had to fight to finish this one, because it just did not seem to flow as well as the first two did, and perhaps that is because this was a triad where the characters just didnt seem to come together as well as they did when it was just Javi/Saul or Saul/Kyle. Would have loved to have seen Javi/Kyle, but that was never mentioned.
I hope that if there is a fourth book in this series for the rest of the guys, that the author takes the time to develop the relationships better than with this third story. I really want to know what happens to Owen, and how his health issues play out.
Kyle came into the relationship to connect with Saul and Javi separately as well as together and Jessie did a beautiful job of showing the growing connection between Saul and Kyle. I feel that Javi got left out completely, once Kyle came along. There was nothing here about Javi and Saul or Javi and Kyle. Kyle even judges Javi and shows disappointment in him for being selfish and not understanding Saul. She alludes to Javi trying to piece together his past and become stronger, but that all gets lost in the side stories of rescuing Miguel and killing Durango.
I don't really feel like Javi got his HEA and it seems the story was ended abruptly. I would love to see perhaps a short story or novella focusing more on Javi's journey and his growth in the relationship. I will still continue to read this series because I really do love Jessie's writing and characters, this book though will probably remain my least favorite in the series.
