I had a situation where I had a couple hard drives that needed checked and/or possibly reformatted. Typically this is a pain because you need to mount them in your desktop machine, check them, uninstall them again, and then get your machine back together. Time consuming and tedious. So I decided an enclosure might be a good thing to have...if I didn't have to spend too much. So I found this Jacobspart enclosure on Amazon. There weren't too many reviews, but the price was right. So I ordered it.

Long story short, it was just what I needed. Installing the disk(s) was a snap. Pull the enclosure apart, plug the disk in, slide it back in and two screws hold it shut. I then plugged the enclosure into my Windows machine and Windows 7 found the proper drivers. Then I was on to the Disk Manager and reformatting.

One thing I should mention--everything you need for this operation is inside the box. The enclosure, the power cable, the screws (even extra drive screws, if you lost yours), an appropriate screwdriver (a great addition!) and the proper USB cable. Initially I missed the USB cable and thought I had to buy my own. But a quick email to the Jacobsparts seller and I realized the cable and screwdriver were included as well. (It pays to look everywhere in the box! :))

Like another reviewer mentioned, the enclosure does get a little warm with long use. (My reformatting operations took multiple hours.) There is no fan, so the heat has to dissipate through the enclosure itself. I found that the heat issue was much less an issue if the enclosure was stood on its side, though. (More surface area exposed to the air, means more heat dissipation.)

All said, this is a good enclosure at a great price. Extra kudos to the Jacobsparts folk for including everything, and for being responsive to emails. Give their products a try!

Product as described. Seems well constructed and dissipates heat effectively - important given fanless/silent design. No mechanism to dampen shocks; some enclosures have foam inserts. Satisfies my needs, would purchase again.

I got this item today, and it was packaged very poorly, about one third of the package had been ripped and about one fifth of the package was missing. I was pleased to see all pieces made it, but a little plastic wrap would have gone a long way; everything was stuffed in a USPS standard priority envelope.
The case would not allow a standard Seagate drive to screw into the enclosure with the front on. I had to remove the front, then screw the hard drive to the enclosure then as I was trying to place the front on I realized the USB slot would not accept a USB cable, I had to bend it to fit the cable in.
Once it was all together & bent into place, it seemed to work. I will be using it as a 2nd back up of footage. If I come across any other issues I will update the review.

I bought two of these because I had 2 1TB SATA hard drives sitting around. They work nicely as a housing to turn these into backup drives. While one of the power supplies burned out after only 6 months, the seller sent me a replacement one free of charge as soon as I let him know. Great service!

I had a computer go down suddenly earlier in the week. I was planning to replace it, anyway, but I had a lot of pictures and documents on it that I didn't want to lose. I researched and found out pulling the hard drive and using one of these eclosure case gadgets might let me transfer my stuff. I'm so happy I did!

I just ordered this case late on Wednesday night. It arrived today (Saturday) in the mail. It did not come with any directions, but I had an easy time getting it put together. There are only a couple screws and a plug to hook in the old drive. It took maybe ten minutes. It fit well in the case, and I used the enclosed screwdriver and screws to secure the drive inside. Then I plugged in the power, hooked the USB to my new computer, and opened K Drive which held all of my photos and documents!! I have now moved them to the new computer and am back where I was before the crash. I even moved my favorites to the new computer so I don't have to re-build them again. Once I'm sure I have all of the data I want off this drive, I plan to clear it out and use it as a backup external drive. I am very happy with this hard drive enclosure. It works, and it's affordable. I recommend it highly.

The construction felt cheap but since I only use this enclosure once a month for backups it seemed like a bargain. I was happy for the first year but recently the center plastic post in the round power connector snapped off. The round design makes it difficult to line up the pins of the plug correctly, and without the plastic post, if I'm slightly off I bend one or more of the wire pins. Then I have to carefully try to straighten out the pins before trying again.

I expect within the next 6 months one of those wires will get a kink or snap off and I won't be able to use the enclosure at all.

Not worth the hassle IMHO. I will think twice before buying a rock-bottom budget brand like this in future.

I ordered this for a friend in an effort to replace their broken enclosure for as cheap as possible. It was easy enough to put together and even came with a handy dandy magnetic phillip's head screwdriver. Assembly was easy enough to figure out without a manual and the drive fit in nice and snug. Plugged it up to my computer and Windows 7 recognized it just fine. I may buy one for myself in the future, bur I personally prefer using the 2.5 inch drives as externals since they do not require the power adapter and are far more compact and portable.

After a week with my friend, they still have no complaints to report about it. =)
