Damaged threads, dented base, scratched post, imprecise fence, used item sold as new

Damaged threads, dented base, scratched post, imprecise fence, used item sold as new
Despite the box being shrink-wrapped, this item appears to have been used and also arrived damaged. The biggest issue is that the threads for the press handle bar were chewed up -- these were either poorly machined, or perhaps more likely, a previous user attempted to thread the bar hastily, and cross-threaded the bar. But, Proxxon should not have sold this as a new item--it is not. As delivered, the bar could only engage 1-2 threads at the wrong angle. Others issues include, a nick (see photo) in the side of the base, and scratches in several places on the vertical post, which also indicate prior use, likely from trying to slide the press carriage when set-screws were too tight. The carriage was slathered with grease, the base/fence dirty, with finger-print smudges. Be prepared to spend some time "fixing" your "new" item. If your threads are damaged, the thread size for the handle is M5-0.8. Save yourself a trip to the hardware store to check (see photo). If you have that size tap and know how to chase threads, you can fix the threads so that the handle screws in as intended. Take care, go perpendicular to the face, and use a cutting lubricant. Unlike some reviews, I will say however, there were no issues with carriage failing to return to original position, so the spring had enough return force. However, the fence is anything but precision. Good luck trying to tighten the fence squarely. I have to use a separate clamp to hold the fence after adjusting its position with a square -- never mind using the built in thumb wheel, as you tighten, the fence will veer off from perpendicular. It is better than trying to drill freehand, but at this price, and considering the quality of other Proxxon tools, this press is a disappointment. No manual was included, but if you are ordering a drill press, surely you can figure out how to put it together. (:

I have used this Proxxon drill press for quite a few years, now. When the appropriate screws are tightened, it is rock solid. The only downside is the return spring is not quite strong enough, IMO. The press doesn't always return all the way to the top, without a little help.

Even though I have an 8" drill press, I still use this little guy quite a bit. It takes up much less bench space than a real drill press. The adjustable fence it very handy. And it stores away, easily.

Recently I purchased a second Proxxon drill press, just so I don't have to switch tools back and forth so much. The stand, itself, has become quite handy to me. A homemade wooden clamp is easy to make, with which to fasten various gizmos to the stand where I want an adjustable height.

Bottom line this is a very good stand. I had same issue another reviewer had with the mechanism binding on the bearing. Just like he stated it is easy to fix and worth the trouble. The issue is the black bearing guide on the side that has the banana shaped hole does not have a clean curved guide surface. This part is a casting and a bit of the overfill they were suppose to trim off prior to painting was not removed. All you need to do is unscrew the 1 screw holding it in place, use your drum sanding wheel ( not a stone) and run it along the curved edge using low speed. Since anyone buying a stand made for a dremel should have a dremel thus is an easy fix. A round file would do the same trick. I rand the sanding drum until the metal flash was removed and cleaned off all the paint on the inside of the race. It is made of zinc and rust will not be an issue. I used some of the extra grease i found caked on the bearing to apply to my cleanup job and then reassembled. It took less that 10 minutes to do and was well worth it as the stand now has a very nice feel and very straight and supported vertical travel. If i did not need to repair it i would have given it 5 stars. Note that this unit is far sturdier than the dremel one. I actually bought one of each for work and use these as arbor press fixtures instead of a dremel stand and this particular stand i found to have a much better guide ( once fixed ;-))

Worked pretty good for what it is. This is not a Mill, or a drill press, but is pretty good at small jobs.

After 4 months, the swivel part that clamps the rotary tool snapped. Replacement part is $18 plus $5 for shipping. Not sure it is worth paying half the cost of the machine to replace 1 part.

OK, so I finally took it out of the box. I had bought an adapter to adapt a Dremel 4000 to this drill press because the Dremel drill press was a toy. The adapter costs nearly half of the press. My adapter replaces the yellow bracket. Others, use a collar. The company in Australia that I bought the adapter from doesn't have it anymore. But there are others that slip on the threads and make the Dremel Proxxon clampable.

Reviews also say the Dremel tool is a joke compared to the Proxxon tool as well and I agree. I have a lot invested in Dremel attachments, but I could not justify the Dremel drill press.

With my adapter, you cannot use the right angle attachment of the Dremel, but I can rotate the chuck. Probably could if you were able to ream another clamp to 0.875 or 0.876.

OK, no instructions. No big deal. But why 3 sizes of hex wrenches and why not some sort of plastic widget that could sit on top of the post and hold them. Surely the front and the bed could use the same screw.

The spring doesn't quite return the quill even with nothing on it. Grease and polishing should fix that. The clamps need two O-rings on them, so they don't get in the way when the quill is set low.

So, lets check the "clamp" or is it a fence. I suppose it's more of a fence. Well, guess what, you can't use the fence in two places where the ribs are. That was EXACTLY where I wanted to put it. Used a combination square to square it up. The vise must be a necessity. Not sure how to clamp a piece of flat stock yet. A miniature staircase clamp would be cool. T-nuts would have been cool. The fence screw should have a hex socket in it and the ribs should be cut a little deeper.

Now, since I wanted to cut rather than drill. I found out there is NO WAY to lock the quill. The screw that looks like a quill lock doesn't work. That would be an adjustment for play. The removed "L Proxxon Mount" to the rescue. It can be placed at the bottom of the Quill to effectively lock it.

A quill lock is essential when you want to drill a precise hole: You center the drill, lock the quill, clamp and drill. That doesn't work here. Hey, I used a precision drill press before and this isn't one of them.

The scale didn't last the first use.

I didn't know about the MB200 which looks like it can drill holes on an angle, but I would need a different Dremel adapter.

I did not look at combined runnout.

I have ordered two of these from Amazon. The first one came with a cracked jaw, making it so I couldn't get the tool into the press. I returned that one.

The second worked great for about an hour. I went to tighten the press at a specific height and the piece that clamps down on the vertical shaft to hold it in place snapped. I tried to finish what I was doing, since I was almost done. Then the other half of the jaw snapped off when I tried to see if i could get it to clamp just tight enough to hold on for a little bit.

If it didn't break just for looking at it, it'd be a great little machine. They really need to make the parts that have stress put on them out of steel.

The Drill Stand is well built, no problem with Fitting all together and previous comments about poor finishing were not evident. I expect it to function as intentioned - as a miniature drill stand, for model making..
