From the Manufacturer
Proxxon Power Carver SGM - This tool takes the work out of your carving projects. For relief carving as well as carving in the round. This power carver is ideal for delicate carving, without applying excessive force. It can be used by all carvers regardless of age or experience, and is perfect for carving all wood types. The rapid cutting action of the SGM (12,000 cuts per minute) allows the ability to do fine work like adding details as well as roughing out. Clean carving with no dust and virtually no effort is ensured. The tool is exceptionally quiet, yet very powerful due to the permanent magnet motor. It is ideal for small to medium carving projects, working on furniture, reconditioning antiques, lino cutting, delicate paint removal and working on plaster of paris. The ergonomic design and light weight (1.6 pounds) for perfect one hand control. the tool is safe as the reciprocating action does not start until the gouge is pressed to the wood. The housing is made of glassfiber-reinforced polyamide and features a multiple ball bearing construction in a die-cast aluminum gear housing. The tool comes with 3 razor sharp bi-metallic knives (each one U, V and flat shape) packed in a durable plastic case.

It has the safety feature of only being activated when it comes in contact with the wood. It does not move the chisel tip(s) unless pressed against the wood.
I wish I had found this product sooner. And the supplier gave me excellent service!
I did not experience this carver to heat up. While I used it, it was quite comfortable without the use of gloves. Some users had mentioned it getting so hot that they needed gloves. Mine did not.
The blades that came with my carver were fairly large. I was hoping to use the carver to carve faces on cane handles. This carver can do the work; but, it is certainly better suited for larger sculpturing. I have a Foredom power carver that does rotary carving. This linear carver is an excellent addition to my tools and will be a valued part of my tool set.
A fair amount of heat is generated in the forward 1/4 of the unit when carving,
but it is tolerable without gloves.
The screw-on metal ring that holds the front together vibrated loose and fell off during the first use,
but it was easy to reinstall, and may not have been installed properly by the maker as it has not vibrated loose after I reinstalled it.
For moderate work, I feel this machine is okay, and reasonably priced.
For heavy duty carving I might be inclined to purchase the Automach unit at more than double the cost of the Proxxon carver.

This tool carves wonderfully - fairly quiet until you engage the hammer to start cutting.
The user should be warned that this machine can get quite hot when used on the harder hardwoods (such as elm). Wear a thick glove to prevent burning your fingers and put the tool down to cool after about 10-20 minutes of continuous use. So if you are serious about carving, you should own two to use alternately. Carving softwood and softer hardwood is less of a problem. (Sliced through cherry and teak like butter.)
I am often surprised that this tool is not more popular. I suppose it appeals to a different kind of wood worker. It is actually quite versatile. It can be used for general carving or squaring out a mortise after drilling the hole. Anything that can be done with a conventional chisel and mallet or carving knife. Very useful for carving architectural ornaments like the wood base for a door knocker or a small wooden medallion for a pendant light. This is my second most frequently used power tool after the Proxxon rotary tool. Highly recommended.
