I own a number of sources that have helped me to worship along with the Psalms and to understand them from an academic perspective as well. I have used commentaries, various prayer books, as well as a host of other complementary books and guides to assist my personal worship and my corporate worship. This Psalter will bind them together and make them more than the sum of their respective parts.
I think Psalms for All Seasons will provide me a lifetime of plumbing the depths and riches of God's Word through praise, prayer, hymn, and song. This is a monumental work academically, artistically, and liturgically. It will appeal equally to the expert and the novice, the congregation or the individual, and the traditionalist or the contemporary worshiper. This is sure to become one of the definitive resources for leading congregations in responsorial worship and liturgical prayer.
Don't delay in adding this exceptional collection to your library! If your congregation is already singing the psalms, you will be utterly delighted by the range of settings. If your congregation does not sing the psalms, you will be eager to introduce the practice. These psalms can be sung for a variety of purposes--as psalms, hymns, calls to prayer, prayers of confession, and so forth. They be sung whole congregations, or led by cantors, choirs, children, or youth. The accompaniments are fulsome yet approachable, so that musicians of all levels will be able to comfortably use the book.
The Calvin Institute of Christian Worship and Faith Alive Resources have provided numerous invaluable publications--this one may be the best one yet.
The thrust behind the psalter is to encourage use of all psalms, not merely the select few with which we are overly familiar. The title “Psalms for All Seasons” appropriately recognizes that the psalms explore the vastness of human experience – from sorrow to joy, from rage to peace, from desperation to hope – and they lift all of this to God in prayer. Thus, in all seasons of life, through this psalter we might be empowered to pray without ceasing.
There is little left to be desired from this impressive tome. Each psalm is well researched and is accompanied by a short commentary, which makes it automatically more accessible. Suggestions are given for when the psalm might be used in the context of worship. The psalm is written in full scriptural text, with optional responsive text in black for group reading. Psalm settings, whether musical or in the form of a litany or prayer, are clearly laid out with helpful information such as guitar chords, chanting points, leader/group parts, and refrains.
Although one could hardly ask for a more comprehensive volume, as a congregation or small group could explore its contents for a good few years before covering it all, upon close examination there are certain psalms that receive less attention than is their due. Psalm 63, for example, a recognizable psalm of longing, contains only two settings, whereas a psalm of a similar nature, Psalm 42, contains seven. Hopefully in the years to come this psalter will be built upon even further, allowing congregations, individuals, Bible studies, and prayer groups to engage deeply in prayer through the psalms, as they can now through this collection.
