Some books are for information and others are for inspiration. Psalms for the Anxious Heart merges both of those into something deeper: an invitation. Becky Harling, speaking from her lifelong immersion in the Psalms, as well as an authentic engagement with her own story, issues a timely and compelling invitation to all of us living in the shadow of a global pandemic. Delving into the psalmists’ recurring choices of praise over panic, she encourages us to reset the rhythm of our days in light of God’s sovereignty and strength. With anxiety on everyone’s doorstep, we are all in need of soul salve, and these practical, poignant pages deliver!

Executive pastor, New Life Church
As I opened Psalms for the Anxious Heart, I wondered, “Can there be rich spiritual depth in such small daily portions?” The answer is a resounding YES! You will find hope in times of hopelessness, learn to lament in Day 5, and love the four daily sections to go deeper: Selah, Today’s Truth, Listen, and Pray. Expect to find your soul enlarged. Mine was!

There are thirty meditations, each one originating from a psalm, bringing words of hope and peace when anxiety would seek to overwhelm our souls.
Each reading includes a few verses, a devotional thought, a question to reflect on, a truth, a selected worship song, and a closing prayer.
This is a wonderful resource to help us shift our focus above our current circumstances to the Almighty One who has all things in His control.
A few of my favorite truths which I was reminded were:
- "You are never alone. God's presence goes before, behind, above, and beneath you. He will never leave you nor forsake you." (page 27)
- "When times are uncertain, remember you have a very sure hope. You are intrinsically connected to God, safe and secure in His treasure pouch." (page 46)
- "Discouragement often precedes enlargement in terms of impact and fruitfulness." (page 79)
- "Praise is a choice. We can choose to praise God and keep our thoughts captive to truth by an act of our will, even when life feels uncertain." (page 115)
Each reading is short, delivering a word to cling to when life seems uncertain and uncontrollable. There are additional verses which are noted to further ones' reading as time allows. In time, one will find their soul at peace as you discover the presence of God, and seek Him in His Word.
The book is beautifully and perfectly written for such a time as this. It blessed me deeply and I have purchased several and sent them as gifts. This is a devotional to be read again and again for its message will never grow old.
*I was provided a copy of this book by Moody Publishers. All opinions are honest and my own.
This book is divided into 30 separate devotions. I felt as if the author was writing directly to me. On Day 21, she wrote about a valley of weeping. Have you ever been in one? I know I have, more than once. We are encouraged to worship, even while weeping.
As you read this book, you will also be encouraged to regularly and intentionally praise God. You will also be reminded that God is still in control, no matter what is going on in this world.
On Day 26, she wrote about our power to choose. We have the right and ability to choose to pray, praise and worship. Those three practices become part of our arsenal to combat anxiety.
I cannot recommend this book enough! I encourage you to buy it and read it, more than once. And, keep it within reach for whenever anxiety tries to take over your thoughts.

While reading through the biblical book of Psalms, Harling helps readers, like myself, to focus on peace instead of anxiety that this world might bring. This small sized book includes short, daily devotionals for thirty days, as the title indicates. Each devotion includes a Psalm scripture, devotional text about the verses, a truth to contemplate upon, and song suggested for readers to expand their devotional time. Psalms for the Anxious Heart is recommended for those seeking hope and peace, as well as moments of relief during these uncertain times. Take a step away from the difficult situations that this world brings, and meditate on the truth and peace of God.
