2012 Release/ This 3-LP set us pressed on 180 gram black vinyl. Side B of the third disc will contain an etching. The first album of original music from Neil Young and Crazy Horse in almost a decade, including over 85 minutes of music. Psychedelic Pill pokes down pathways that have been hinted at before in this teaming, but never fully explored. New textures emerge in the music, new landscapes in the lyrics. In many ways, Psychedelic Pill rounds out an array of probing works with prominent autobiographical threads.

I am certainly not implying that this music is for everyone. In fact, this would be a difficult introduction to Neil Young's music. And for those who think Neil's career started and stopped with Harvest (or Harvest Moon), you might have a problem here. But for those who still pull Tonight's the Night or Ragged Glory or Live Rust off the shelf and love them, this one's for you.
So, my take on this is that there are four guys who believe that rock and roll can change lives, they get together every few years or so, and just play. And Driftin' Back and Walk Like a Giant can stand with Like a Hurricane or Cortez the Killer any day of the week. We are truly blessed that Neil Young and Crazy Horse still care enough to play for us.
Crazy Horse REALLY shows their stuff here. Their chops are as good as ever, and their backup vocals sound as if they might have been recorded during the band's heyday. The production is compressed enough to surround the listener with a sound they remember.
Still, if there is magic here, it's that Young and the band span the generations with their musical lines, production values and lyrics. The opener, "Driftin' Back" might describe the world-view of a late teen, a young adult or someone as old as I am. That's not easy. "For the love of Man" and "Walk Like a Giant" will move some listeners to outrage, pride, or tears. They just work.
Throughout, Young, Sampedro, Talbot, Molina and Greco create a work that I consider classic. Some fine wines taste balanced and refined right out of the bottle. Others have to age for a while. This set works from the first spin: it tastes balanced, full-bodied and memorable right out of the bottle.
What a gift Young has given us. PSYCHEDELIC PILL stands up to the best these artists have produced in over four decades. And now, the price has dropped on amazon, so no reason to hesitate. Go for it.
