Dr Simon writes clearly, and this text is a masterful integration of philosophy and psychology. In this reviewer's opinion, Simon combines the wisdom and skills of a Victor Frankl (logotherapy) + Irv Yalom (existential therapy) + Thomas Szasz (critical psychiatry perspective).
"Psycho"Therapy and the Stories We Live By
challenges the mental health field to drop its practice of "categorizing" and "pathologizing"
vagaries of human thoughts, behaviors, and affect. The author dismisses, outright, the possibility of a "sick'
or "healthy" mind. Rather, he articulates that humans are self-reflective agents who are busy "mind-ing" in various ways, determined by a complex interplay of environmental, social, and biological contexts. How a person "minds" (verb), for better or worse, is never reducible to brain physiology. He compares and contrasts paradigms of autonoesis (life narrative exegesis) >> moral judgment vs. descriptive, demonstrating the
healing power of humanistic inquiry and understanding.
Reflecting upon the personal transformation which he experienced as a college professor of psychology
(specifically, surviving the transition in New York City schools from a merit-based admissions system to an
'open' admissions process in the 1970s), Simon came to "see" how an authoritarian model of education [and its negative effects] had clear parallels in the American health care system. Resultingly, he came to appreciate the liberating effects of a democratic approach to both teaching and counseling ("therapizing").
I am inspired by the knowledge, integrity, honesty, and humility of Dr. SImon. Although I am disappointed that my life trajectory did not place me as a student in one of his college classrooms, I consider myself richly blessed to enjoy the contributions that he now shares at the pinnacle of a career and life well lived.

This book is aimed at a general reader who is committed to living as a citizen in a democracy as well as any individuals concerned that psychiatry controlled by Big Pharma is or has hurt their lives more than it has helped. The book argues that the term "mental illness" is an unscientific authoritarian moral judgement of problems in living that prevents real understanding of the emotional pain of those seeking professional help. It goes on to describe the author's concept of psycho"therapy" as a democratic relationship free of medical jargon that helps suffering individuals understand and change the narratives by which they live. The volume is composed of six chapters, including an "Introduction," "Philosophical Issues," "The Politics of Human Relationships," "Mental Illnesses," "Mental Health," "Education," and "Psycho"therapy."

- Reviewed in the United States on March 26, 2020Format: PaperbackVerified PurchaseIn Psycho"Therapy" and the Stories we Live By, retired clinical psychologist and college professor Laurence Simon, candidly conveys his lifetime of learning into the human condition and the meaning of life. Well, maybe not the meaning of life, but bringing meaning to one's life. Dr. Simon constructs a rather comprehensive view of what makes people tick and explains why the current state of mental health "care," is wrong-headed and harmful. There is a lot of insight in this relatively short book.
This is a book that everyone can learn from to understand themselves and others and create a more satisfying life for themselves.
- Reviewed in the United States on June 10, 2019Format: PaperbackVerified PurchaseThis is a well organized and clearly written book on psycho therapy for the general public interested in serious aspects of the mental health world of our time. Combining his unique theory on the practice of psychotherapy and a fascinating autobiographical presentation of a long career as a college professor, author and clinical psychologist, Dr. Simon takes us through the classroom, the clinic and the nursing home, presenting cases from the evolution of his professional and personal life. The reader will come away from this volume with an enlightened perspective on modern psychiatry, the prescriptive drug culture and the place of the personal narrative in our lives.
- Reviewed in the United States on January 2, 2020Format: KindleI particularly enjoyed Psycho "Therapy" having listened to Dr Simon's broadcasts "Stories We Live By". It, for me, is like reading an Audio Book. It is an easy to read page turner.
I like it when an author can give examples to illustrate his theories. Dr Simon gives many colorful anecdotes to liven his theories thus making the reading even more enjoyable to a lay person, such as myself.
His delving into the explanation of topics such as repression, anxiety, panic, denial, the place for Big Pharma and the side effects of some medication, depression, existential despair, PTSD, delusions, defense mechanisms, schizophrenia, mental health and mental illness illuminates the topics and makes them comprehensible. His many examples of his "patients" disorders give rise to a clear understanding of the ineptitude of the "accepted" belief systems of treating mental illnesses and disorders.
He isn't afraid to step on certain "well established totalitarian toes". Witness the heart wrenching story of his patient who was diagnosed as schizophrenic and the conflict between Dr Simon and the psychiatrist who cancelled this patient's plan to plan a dinner party and the resulting effect of extinguishing hope.
Dr Simon gets to the crux of the matter when he states "...professionals utilizing beliefs that are not delusional simply because they are shared by other professionals".
I don't want to give away the conclusion of this book and may I say I don't have the wherewithal to go up against the medical establishment but this book is encouraging, to the point whereby I was screaming at the book "good for you".
