If you have a choice of textbooks, I would recommend this one. It may not be the cheapest one out there, but it was very helpful, and it came with free access to online materials. The only con I can think of is that some of the boxes with examples of concepts were a little distracting, but that is something I could easily get past.
I love to read... just about anything I can get my hands on, and when I am finished with a book, I give it away or donate it. Not this book. It is shelved in my permanent "keep" collection. If you ever thought about a career in psychology or clinical sociology, you really need to read this book.
The book has the challenge of giving an introduction to psychology, a broad topic. I didn't expect anything incredibly in depth, but this book can be a maze of contradictions, half truths, and poorly asserted facts. The book does not go to great length to cover how psychological experiments are performed, how experiments are designed, or certain caveats in experimentation. The author would do well to spend more time on the science of psychology and less time collecting witty epigrams and New Yorker cartoons. The editors would do well to spend less time composing each page graphically, and more time critiquing when this book squarely contradicts itself.
This textbook would most likely be used in an introductory course for college freshmen, who have not yet developed the analytical skills to see the flaws in thinking presented here. It is a poor choice.
Learn why you're study time isn't productive, why you're sleep time isn't restful, and why the people you interact with respond to you the way they do.
