These authors have developed a very powerful theory (Risk-Need-Responsivity)that is the most frequently used method of designing and delivering correctional programming in the US, Canada, and many European countries.

Everyone in the Western United States who works in Corrections or has family as inmates should have this text book on their shelf. I read it from cover to cover. It tells the History of Criminology, mass incarceration and how to reverse the increasing expense of prison. It is a book of hope for any legislator who has to make decisions about incarceration. The science is sound, the references are germane, the reading is clear. It is the kind of book that brings clarity to our curse of 2 million people in prison and offers real strategies for overcoming the warehousing mentality and turning our attention to rehabilitation. Buy this book and give it as a Christmas present to employees of incarceration in the West. I do not recommend it for State prisons in the South or Midwest or Northeast because they are hopelessly entangled from their legislature all the way down to the street cop.
