Writers know that their characters and stories should be multi-layered and believable. Now here’s a simple workbook that uses the same knowledge that gives therapists insight into human behaviour to create fiction that hits the mark. Each chapter outlines an aspect of psychological theory as it can be used for writing and provides two worksheets to translate it into action – one to develop characters, one to develop the story.Darian Smith is a prize winning fiction writer with a degree in psychology, a Diploma of Counselling, and is a member of the New Zealand Association of Counsellors. He combines these two sides of his background to provide simple, easy to follow tools that make use of established psychological theory to help writers develop fully rounded, interesting, realistic characters and inject conflict into their stories.Give your writing the benefit of over a decade of training and experience and discover how to have readers wanting more.

Thank you
The book was helpful. I made me understand a ton of things I’ve seen in life, tv shows, and movies that I didn’t know could affect real life outcomes and literary conflicts. It’s not a self-help book but it did change my perception of how I should start seeing the world and it also will continue to guide me through my book writing. This book has about ten to fifteen pages of worksheets that will help with character development and creating conflicts to make for a more interesting story.

I don't think I expected much from this resource, but it delivered. The theory was a little wild, but the charts are going to lend some interesting dimension to any character they are applied to. What I like about the charts in this book is that there are both character development charts and plot development charts to consider. Also, there's at least half a dozen ways you can apply his theories, so you can mix and match them. I think if you tried to use them all, it wouldn't work. Give this one a shot, it's a neat book.

This book is quite short, and the worksheets aren't really helpful. I also noticed at least one proof error.

With that being said, it does contain some useful information that could be useful for writers who are looking to give more depth to their characters.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fast and fabulous
Reviewed in Brazil on August 15, 2022
This book offers a great starting point for writers aiming to benefit from several decades of research in psychology in a laguage that is friendly to fiction writers that know nothing about it. However condensed, the book offers lots of insights that can really be applied to a story to make it better while offering sources for further reading in case the reader wishes to dig deeper. For that, I would go as far as to say that this is an indispensable read for writers in formation.

5.0 out of 5 stars La guía definitiva para padawans de la caracterización
Reviewed in Spain on April 13, 2017
