Public Speaking for Psychologists: A Lighthearted Guide to Research Presentations, Job Talks, and Other Opportunities to Embarrass Yourself 1st Edition, Kindle Edition
Public speaking is one of the most common fears. Few people look forward to talking in front of others and even fewer do it as effectively as they could. A career in psychology and its related fields involves extensive public speaking, so you will need to learn to do it well. With time and practice, you too can become a confident and effective presenter.
The first half of Public Speaking for Psychologists covers the nuts-and-bolts of public speaking: preparing a talk, submitting an abstract, developing your slides, managing anxiety, handling questions, and preventing public-speaking disasters. The second half applies these tips to common presentations, such as research talks, poster presentations, job talks, and talks to lay audiences. Throughout the book, the authors—both experienced presenters—offer realistic advice, useful tips, and humorous stories of embarrassing mistakes they'll never make again.

- Reviewed in the United States on December 17, 2011I bought this when I had a psychology poster presentation coming up. It helped me a lot to get together ideas for the kind of things to say when giving the initial presentation, and how to make the "browsing" part (where people just walk around and read the posters) interactive and successful. The presentation (my first one) ended up going really well, and I (at least partly) thank this book for that.
It's also really fun to read, and funny at times too.
- Reviewed in the United States on April 7, 2014As a future psychologist pursuing a career in research and teaching, this book has excellent suggestions that can help in a wide variety of settings (conferences, classes, job talks, etc.)
- Reviewed in the United States on May 29, 2010This book was entertaining to read and didn't really feel like work. It offered helpful suggestions and I recommend it to anyone thinking about giving a presentation (particularly psych types). The best praise I can give it was after reading it I went ahead and bought another one of the author's books and now I like that one too: How to Write a Lot: A Practical Guide to Productive Academic Writing
- Reviewed in the United States on February 6, 2011This is a funny and easy book to read but very informative at the same time. My professor was actually Paul Silvia and he's a really cool guy; he's got a sarcastic sense of humor and really down to earth. This is a must-read if you're a PSYCH major because you'll be giving a lot of presentations in your career!
- Reviewed in the United States on February 11, 2016Brilliant, hilarious, and so easy to read, this short book is packed with practical suggestions that will make you a better speaker, regardless of your academic discipline.
- Reviewed in the United States on October 13, 2011I had been a while since I last felt like I could not put a book down.
The authors did a great job.
I recommend this book to any person who gets VERY nervous about public speaking and wants to be prepared.
- Reviewed in the United States on April 7, 2015Excellent book. Fast read, humorous, and chock-full of useful information. I'm sure I will be referring to this time and time again. I recommend this especially for those who have limited presentation experience. The authors and other reviews state that even experienced presenters can benefit from this book. As a novice, I can say that reading this book increased my confidence and knowledge in presentation style, etiquette, and efficiency.
