'Your smile is one of the most beautiful things I’ve ever seen. Your smile makes me believe that the world is a better place than I think.' ~ Puck Me Baby
Alright, it’s time for a confession . . .
I fell so far behind on my reading that I missed new books from not one but TWO of my favorite authors—Lauren Blakely and Lili Valente. *Hangs head in shame*.
But it’s okay, because I’m all caught up now, I’m head over swoony-heels in love, and excited AF. Why the excitement? Well, aside from loving Hard Wood and Puck Me Baby, it’s because Ms. Blakely and Ms. Valente are planning on releasing a book together. My inner fangirl is freaking out.
Anywho, it’s because of that, that I decided to make this a joint review. These two authors are among my favorites for similar reasons—fun, flirty banter; sexy, swoony heroes; smart, sassy heroines; love stories that are endless love, heart-racing romance and imbued with all the feels.
Take Hard Wood for example. Funny, punny name? Check. Charming, irreverent hero? Check. Likable, relatable heroine? Check. It’s an incredibly enjoyable book—light-hearted, mixing the right kind of miscommunication (yes, IMHO, there is a wrong kind in romance novels, but that’s a discussion for another time) and the right amount of honesty and bravery with a hiking cat.
I said hiking cat. In a review. That is the magic of Ms. Blakely’s writing. It’s quirky enough to be playful and different, yet real enough to be, well, real.
And it’s the same kind of magic you’ll find when you read a book by Ms. Valente, also. I’ve loved every single book of hers I have read, but her Bad Motherpuckers series has its own little place in my heart. And that little place is now stamped with the name Alexi Petrov.
You guys, if you need a lesson in how to spell deliciously chivalrous . . . here you go: A-L-E-X-I-P-E-T-R-O-V. But here’s the thing about Puck Me Baby—it’s not just Alexi that’s infinitely lovable. Amanda, too, is someone kinda irresistible. She’s sunny, funny and sometimes even punny, but her insides? They’re bruised in a heart-breaking way, and if that doesn’t make you want to wish her into reality and give her a hug then IDK, you’re probably a monster.
I kid, I kid. You’re not a monster, but you ARE missing out. Hard Wood and Puck Me Baby are two of my favorite books of 2017, and two of my favorite ever books written by two of my favorite authors. So, consider this messy confession more of a love letter if you must, but also considering one-clicking these books ASAP.
You don’t want to miss out.
'I don’t know where we are headed tonight. I don’t know where we’re going. All I know is I can’t turn back.' ~ Hard Wood
Russian born Alexi Petrov is the mean, sexy protector of the Portland hockey team, tall, dark, and handsome. He and Amanda Esposito share a passionate one-night stand that leaves her with a consequence and they hadn't even shared last names. But fate intervenes when their respective BFFS get married. Amanda is 12 weeks along.
Alexi is thrilled to connect up with the sexy, charming Amanda, although daunted when the news of the pregnancy sparks memories of another girlfriend, another pregnancy that did not end well. Rather than worry Amanda, maybe unnecessarily, he buries his worry. Wrong move, yeah. We know that's coming.
Despite her nerves and misgivings, Amanda discovers her relationship with Alexi could be more than friendly co-parents. Will she shed her fears built from failed relationships? Will he? Will she forgive him when tensions mount during a baby health scare?
For a guy with a mean reputation on the ice, Alexi wears his heart on his sleeve where Amanda & their baby are concerned & I loved that. He just wants to take care of his lady. Fortunately, Amanda finds that part of his charm. I loved Amanda bright, positive outlook despite her rough upbringing. She is funny, sweet, and sassy and not shy in asking for her sexy times. These 2 so deserved their HEA.
Be prepared to laugh --- there's a hilarious scene involving a giant spider and a giant dildo --- and cry -- these 2 will break your heart, but I won't say how. (But I especially like books where we get to meet baby.).
5 + Stars! You won't be disappointed.
This is such a fun sexy series but Puck Me Baby is hands down the best complete story.
Alexi is the scariest defender in the professional hockey world. Amanda is a hilarious but sweet pediatric nurse.
They have a hot one night stand and part ways unknowing they made a baby that will bring them together forever. Twelve weeks later they are reunited at their mutual friends wedding. Alexi is elated that he is back in the presence of the sexy woman who bolted from his bed the next morning. Mandy is grateful for the chance encounter to tell the sexy Russian he is going to be a Dad.
I loved these two as a couple. They were sweet and open to their feelings regardless of their pasts which tried to hold them back.
Alexi is by far one of my top favorite heros and that's no exaggeration. He constantly put his own fears and worries aside as thought of what Mandy was going through first. He had endured so much and wanted so badly to believe this was his chance and things would be different. He was protective and loving and sweet and sexy!
This one had me reaching for a couple of tissues. They go through one of the most difficult times an expecting couple can endure. They experience true fear but come out stronger because of it. Through it all you know how much he loves her, not because of the baby, but in addition to the life they made. He knew he wanted her in his life; baby or no baby.
"Please tell me there's a way to make this better, a way to prove to you that I'm worthy of a place in your life and in your heart."
This was a beautiful tear jerker and seriously one of my favorite reads this year!
I want more!!!
