Charlene's mom killed me. But then most of the parents in these stories are so funny. And then when the girls all went to the sex convention, OMG! I totally knew that Violet was going to have a "sword-fight" with the strap-on. I just knew it. Then Charlene's background at The Harvest Co-op was one that I wasn't sure just how bad it got. That was something that kept going throughout the story, and kept me on the edge waiting to hear just what had happened there. Darren's family issues fit perfectly with Charlene's, well, especially with her mother. I loved the bit about Charlene's candy as well.
One funny thing about the story tied in perfectly to something the author said at a panel at Book Bonanza. She said that she has to actually sometimes get into the positions for the sex scenes to figure out how to write them. I was having trouble picturing the final scene in this book, so I told her that and we laughed and figured it out.
After listening to the first chapter, I was a goner. The narrators, Sebastian York and Stella Bloom, did an excellent job in performing the story - adding unique touches and voice inflections to keep the listener's attention. Sometimes in audio format, it's the story that keeps one engaged. This had the winning combo of both the narration and excellent story line.
The dynamic between Darren and Charlene was unexpected. You know how they say it takes a village to make a man? Well, I felt that it took a small village to keep this couple together.... the entire Pucked gang to be precise.
You see, Darren and Charlene's reationsihp started oddly enough with a request to sign an NDA. Charlene refused to sign. Darren didn't push. An unspoken trust was built. However, unspoken trust leaves a lot of grey area. It's that grey area that starts to build some miscommunication test the true stability of Darren and Charlene's relationship. Despite them being together for a few years, they have emotionally kept each other at arm's length. Yet, as their relationship grows more serious, they discover there's more about each other, especially their past, they'll need to figure out before they can reach their HEA.
As in all other Pucked books, this story was not short of funny and awkward situations, sexy times, and lots of angst with ALL THE FEELS. But I think the incorporation of all the other characters, especially Violet, Randy, and Lance helped bring this story full circle. We got to see a different side to each character of the gang; how they interacted on a friendship level, and how they came together to support each other.
I would highly suggest hearing this story on audio. If you're a first time audible.com subscriber, you can even listen to it for FREE with their trial.
I'm not going to put my full review here (it's on Audible) because I know there are so many people who don't do audiobooks and are waiting for the ebook to come out in the Fall so I don't want to spoil anything, even inadvertantly, for them. But suffice it to say, I loved this story! It was so much more than I could have ever imagined! Ms. Hunting will have you laughing your butt off one minute and then holding back the tears the next. Darren ranks right up there with Lance and Randy for me.
Borrowed through Audible RP.
Darren and Charlene are both very broken because of their pasts. Yet, together, they balance each other and improve themselves. They naturally understand each other and the need to sometimes shut down and not share. They have been together nearly two years, hot sexy times is a given. Honest feelings and forever commitments are harder, even admitting that to themselves.
Helena always brings swoon worthy moments and laugh until those around you want to know what is so darn funny moments. This book will give you all that and some serious surprises. From strap-on wars to romantic declarations, this book ends a series we have all loved on a high note. Burn bright, Firefly! I just hope there is some way for a Christmas book or the next generation to keep this family we have all embraced close.
