The main objectives of Pufferfish are to establish a business practice that is similar to the characteristics of a pufferfish. Frew describes an ideal business using the pufferfish effect as “small but blow themselves up to several times their size when needed” (xi) and “are the most poisonous vertebrates in the world” (xi). Frew emphasizes that pufferfish do not hide from predators and if anyone tries to eat them, they will regret it. This book uses simple examples for owners to test out in their own business practices. The book revolves around ways to market your own company by networking, tracking, self-promoting and many other ideas that create a distinguishable mantra from competitors. Frew includes all aspects of marketing from the customer to the product or service, to the employees, and to the leaders. Everyone who is part of a business is not excluded and can take away marketing strategies and techniques to market a business better even in the slightest.
Frew’s main argument is to keep trying after failures and to keep testing out different ways until a particular outcome works for your business. One example that Frew uses to exemplify good marketing techniques to boost publicity and gain attention for the general public is the airline industry. Frew explains that Frontier Airlines launched a new marketing plan that emphasized the care of animals, especially travelling on their planes. Frontier Airlines incorporated the community in an event that implemented marketing strategies to gain interest for their business which became a point of differentiation for their brand.
Frew does a great job in incorporating the reader within her own anecdotes and advice. She includes sections of the text after each step. These sections allow the reader to implement their own business to match the practices of Frew’s own business successes. In these sections, you are able to write in your own strategies using her advice. Frew asks real world questions that the reader can answer directly into the book to understand the concepts. Although the text is fairly simple, joining into the conversation is a great way to learn new ideas especially if the reader is new business owner. After reading this book, I realized the possibilities of eventually growing my own accounting firm one day. With an accounting background and interest, marketing to clients in the future is an essential step in establishing a business. Based on Frew’s strategies, any business owner can learn how be a customer centric company that delivers great service as long as there is a leadership attitude by putting in hard work
Overall, Frew does an amazing job interpreting business practices to that of a pufferfish which can be personalized to any specific business. She includes the reader by allowing them to take part instead of just another author who gives advice and leaves it at that. The Pufferfish Effect is a simple and easy read for anyone interesting in growing their business. She goes into depth about her objects as a business owner and expresses interest in helping people gain opportunity and turn into success. Her own story about her life and how she created an enterprise and expanded is applicable to anyone and also a great story. The story was realistic and personal instead of a fabricated story to make a quick buck. I would recommend this book to anyone that is willing to put in the hard work that Frew emphasizes because with her simple but educated advice, anyone can reach the big leagues of the business and marketing world.
