Sexual situations may offend some readers
What I can't escape is what a slog it was to read through to get to actual plot instead of endless inner monologues and backstory info dumps. There was important (?) stuff in there, but the tone of the story was so pedantic, IMHO, it killed any suspense for *me*. The mother in the story drove me nuts. The truths left dangling at the end also drove me nuts -- why didn't anyone tell their loved ones or interested parties the actual whole truth of their birth status or about their siblings to their parents?
I won't spoil the ending, but if it didn't drive YOU crazy about the mother not being given the total truth, and to knock off her holier-than-thou My Daughter DIED personality, well, damn.
This is a Peyton Place, but without the pay-offs necessary for it to feel complete. Maybe these issues are dealt with in later books, but if so, erg, I'm not reading them. If it hadn't been on my iPad Kindle program, I would have thrown the book across the room. I deleted it instead.
Audra Valentine has moved away from her home town and her past. She married Christopher Wheyton and moved to California. She has a young daughter and a wonderful job writing for a television series. She has managed to keep her identity as the writer a secret to keep her private life private. That changes when Christopher dies on the eve of a trip with his daughter to their hometown. Audra must return for the funeral. Has the town forgotten her past? Will the rumors of her mother return? How will her in-laws treat her since they blame her for Christopher’s moving to California and her ditching one brother for another?
Josh Wheyton is a prominent neurosurgeon who specializes in pediatric care. He is on the verge of becoming engaged. After leaving home and Audra, he soon realized he wanted Audra; but returns to find her having taken up with his brother and their moving to California. He now has to face her again and has a new problem to deal with- “Uncle Peter”. Peter is a good friend of Christopher and Audra; but Josh is concerned with just how good a friend Peter was to Audra.
Will Audra take her daughter and return to California keeping her daughter from her uncle and her grandparents? Will the rumors of Audra’s Mother come back to haunt them all?
