An Iconic Film. Aging With Grace

Asking someone to list the best films ever is a long-winded way of asking them how old they are. Unless they're a film student, then you're getting even less objective criteria. So I'll skip the platitudes about one of the most reviewed and commented-upon films in history, it'd be impossible to say anything new anyway.

The 4k transfer for this recent version was done well. Minor film grain visible, but it's not overdone, and I don't recall the theatrical release being particularly grainy, either. Detail is superb, and for a film with this many close up face shots, had to be done well. It was.

Soundtrack wasn't upsampled to Atmos or anything, still basically the same 5.1 DTS-HD track you got on the 1080P blu-ray. It's crisp and clear, the music sounds fantastic. You'll notice it when you're supposed to, and not when you're not, exactly how a soundtrack should be.

As for aging gracefully, I noticed rewatching this film in 4k, just how little period technology there is. A few shots of chunky, 1990s cell phones, but not much else. Intentional or otherwise, this decision by Tarantino has a profound impact on the film nearly 30 years later. Instead of being a period piece, Pulp Fiction feels like a story out of time. There's no jarring focus on period tech that makes so many films of this era show their age.

Pulp Fiction is a story about people, the focus is on people, and because of that it's timeless.

One of the greatest films of all-time gets one of the best 4K blurays of 2022 alongside Criterion's Malcolm X and another Tarantino great Reservoir Dogs from Lionsgate. The color timing and grading + the transfer is literal magnificence. Wish more special features were included since they're all from the OG Miramax bluray. However said features are still solid so if you wanted to sell or trade the old bluray, you'll be fine.

Essentially this 4K disc is a bad MFer. If you already love the film and are capable of 4K media playback, quit BSing and buy this already.

I’d seen True Romance which Quentin Tarantino had written and Reservoir Dogs, his first feature film which was a mind blower, but nothing prepared me for Pulp Fiction when I saw it in a theater. The movie was a ground breaker while borrowing from dozens of previous films. It is a true cinematic classic.

The plot has four main stories which are intertwined and shown through a variety of flash backs and present scenes which play with the idea of what a narrative is supposed to be. The opening for example shows Pumpkin (Tim Roth) and his girlfriend Honey Bunny (Amanda Plummer) talking about carrying out a robbery in a dinner before they jump up on the tables and chairs and tell everyone to put their hands up, they’re sticking the place up. Then there’s two gangster henchmen Vincent Vega (John Travolta) and Jules (Samuel L. Jackson) who are given a job to retrieve a very important briefcase for their boss Marsellus Wallace (Ving Rhames). In a separate story arch Vega also has the job to take his boss’s wife Mia Wallace (Uma Thurman) out on a date. Finally, Butch (Bruce Willis) who was supposed to throw a fight for Wallace, but has a change of heart.

Pulp Fiction builds on many techniques that Tarantino originally used in Reservoir Dogs. The flash backs and intermixing of stories for example was used in that film, and has its origins in Akira Kurosawa’s Rashomon. For instance, the third major scene has Vega and Jules going to see Marsellus, which happened chronologically after the very last scene of the film. The love of dialogue is another. Tarantino originally had a way to tell stories that was almost completely original. Vega and Jules for example are talking on their drive to their job and discuss how hamburgers and friends are named differently in Europe because they have the metric system so they can’t be called “Quarter Pounders”, and they also use mayonnaise on their fries. Later they talk about the intimacies of foot messages. The best example however is when Jules gives a speech to one of the men he has to collect the briefcase from. The man is so flustered that all he can say is what and Jules grows angrier and angrier until eventually threatening him if he says what again. He then gives a quote from the Bible, Ezekiel 25:27, which was taken from a Japanese film called The Bodyguard/Karate Kiba featuring Sonny Chiba who would go on to be seen in Tarantino’s Kill Bill. Today, Tarantino has completely lost control of his dialogue such as in Death Proof, the Hateful Eight and Once Upon A Time In Hollywood, but this was when he was still fresh and exciting and it just adds to the story rather than detracts. Another thing similar between Reservoir Dogs and Pulp Fiction was spates of extreme violence. It’s not just shooting people however, there’s a very crazy S&M-rape scene involving Butch and Marsellus that just blew people’s minds when they originally saw it. Finally, as should be obvious Tarantino is a movie lover and used all kinds of influences in all of his films. Besides the ones already mentioned another famous one is the dance scene between Vega and Mia Wallace where they do the Twist at a restaurant. That is liberally borrowed from 8 ½ by Federico Fellini.

It’s these elements combined with a completely original story that make Pulp Fiction such an amazing movie to this day.

Die ständig wechselnden Episoden, die genialen Dialoge, welche jeden echten Tarantino-Streifen unverkennbar als solchen entlarven und die absolute Coolness dieses Films zeigen, wie viel Schweiß und Blut Quentin Tarantino in Filme wie diesen, als Regisseur & Drehbuchautor steckt. Nicht zu Unrecht räumte er hierfür auch den Oscar für das “beste Drehbuch” ab. Da der Film aus mehreren Episoden, die erst am Ende einen Sinn ergeben, besteht, hat man überhaupt keine Möglichkeit, sich im Vorfeld ein Ende auszumalen. Bis zur letzten Sekunde ist alles noch alles möglich (was bei einem typischen Tarantino-Film eigentlich immer der Fall ist), was den Film nicht nur interessanter macht, sondern den Zuschauer bis zum Schluss neugierig macht und ihn an den Bildschirm fesselt. Ganz nebenbei war die Besetzung ein absoluter Volltreffer: John Travolta, in der Rolle seines Lebens, Samuel L. Jackson, der für seine Darstellung des Jules Winnfield für einen Oscar nominiert wurde, Bruce Willis in absoluter Höchstform und klassischer “Die Hard-Manie” (und viele weitere geniale schauspielerischen Leistungen, wie z.B. von Tim Roth, Harvey Keitel, Uma Thurman… Um es kurz zu machen: Dieser Film ist an Genialität nicht zu übertreffen. Ein echter Tarantino eben!

Classics can't be reviewed, and hence I wouldn't say anything about the film, apart from the fact that this is one of the most darkly comic and/or comically dark films that you can see. It's fast, funny, tragic, sharp, and surreal. In short it's incomparable, and you better watch it, or else you wouldn't even know how deprived you have been so far.

The DVD is also a classic in the sense that it's very-very reasonably priced, has the necessary things (including SDH), and is quite clean in terms of picture.

Do you need anything more, before you place the order? I don't think so. Happy viewing.

It's a fantastic cult classic! To be honest I didn't really need this on BluRay, but I went for it. Not a massive difference in quality, but then the film was made before BluRay so I didn't expect there to be.
I love this film, and I always have. Fantastic acting, amazing directing and brilliant story.

having watched this movie with my husband a few times decided to buy it for him as it is one of his favs. There are certain scenes that are really good and I feel that you get more from them second time around . This is action packed from start to finish and you cannot get up and grab a drink with out missing a link that may be a important part of the story later. All the actors ae good when you look at the cast list you know you are in for a treat, but if you dont like real life in your films this is not for you, when someone gets shot there is blood and plenty of it . I think that this is not a film for youngers it is for over 18.

Obviously the film is one of the all time greatest ever made and the film deserves 5 stars.

I am giving this particular version 4 stars because I've bought the Pulp Fiction 20th Anniversary Deluxe Box [Blu-ray] and the memorabilia is nice but the blue ray inside is the basic version in a standard blue box. I would have expected a more individual box as it's part of a special box set.
