I have read and collected all the Dick Francis books ‘from the beginning’, and felt the huge loss when he was gone. Felix picked up the reins for his father and kept those stories and character icons going for us who found his three-dimensional heroes, flawed and challenged and clever and smart, people of an ethic and moral high standard who were worth the investment of one’s time. Like the incredible Nevil Shute, a Francis story means something, and the people in such stories are ones I liked and cared about and wanted to know. The main character of a Francis novel is the rounded focus and the POV of the action.
With “Pulse”, it was immediately apparent that Felix has stepped forward into his own place in our esteem, speaking with a clarity and style through a well-grounded story told by a flawed and wonderful lead character who lets us in to her messy, challenging life, as she battles against all threats to the ingrained thread of rightness woven into her make-up.
Dr. Chris Rankin is worthy of this well-told mystery wrapped in the struggles of a very real ‘everyday hero’ who is dancing for her life on so many levels. Her development throughout the ‘slice of her life’ included in this book is full of tension, is educational, and is inspiring. There are no false notes in this person, neither grandiose and unbelievable perfection nor stereotypical wallowing in the ashes of doom. After the last page ends, I still want to know what is next for her and how her story will continue.
Felix, you have your own full voice, honorable, rich, full, unique, which adds your own enticing lane to the stories of good people whom the world takes on. Well done! When’s the next? And, thank you.
