The world Susanette lives in is one we city-dwellers may struggle to understand. We have WiFi hotspots, Starbucks, online everything, cars with seat belts and rear vision cameras. We buy a house; we don’t build one … we wouldn’t know how, and we wouldn’t try. We get our food at grocery stores, most likely non-GMO and wrapped in clear plastic. We don’t know the details of how to hang a hog, but Susanette did. It’s a world of simplicity, hard work, strong family attachment, and love.
Read it. You’ll fall in love with Susanette, and the book will open your eyes to a world we only dimly remember.
The conversational tone kept me reading, wanting to know more about the young child's family and her life on a southern farm during this time period. Ms. Baxter shares photos and family recipes as well as some embarrassing moments appreciated by this reader. This is a thoughtful and relatable memoir, one I kept picking back up almost as soon as I lay it down.
