On Halloween night, this pumpkin-shaped orange LP will rise from sincere vinyl collections the world over and bring audible presents to all the good girls and boys. Previously thought lost to time: this album contains the original analog session reels for It's The Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown. This 33 1/3 rpm version of the soundtrack are the cues as recorded by Vince and crew before edited for the television special, as well as a selection of alternate takes. Includes new, expanded liner notes.

A few years ago I bought what I thought was the LP of "It's the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown", but accidentally ordered the CD. I didn't think this LP would have anything new to offer but I was wrong. A reviewer mentioned that the sound effects were removed from this version of "It's The Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown", whereas on the version I bought previously they are present.

The songs (of which there are numerous reprise takes) are beautifully stitched together like musical vignettes. The tempo is a bit slower and more pensive but also seems to convey themes from the story even in the absence of vocals. Graveyard theme evokes tip-toeing through a moonlit pumpkin patch. Similarly, one can visualize the leaves falling and swirling about on an autumn breeze while listening to the intro to Snoopy and the Leaf/Frieda (With the Naturally Curly Hair). And Great Pumpkin Waltz? Well that's pure Vince Guaraldi genius.

It is not uncommon for music to evoke mood but this album evokes imagery more effectively than most — something I failed to appreciate about the TV special until the sound effects were stripped away. While this is a fitting soundtrack for the fall season, in truth it's great background jazz for coffee, tea, a good book, a catnap or a rainy day. There's no reason to wait until September-October to break this album out.

Having listened to this CD today, I still stand by what I said yesterday about the other release. Yes, this version also reminds me of the special, but not as much with the removal of the sound effects. This CD is pure Vince Guaraldi music but there has not been a complete transformation. Yes, there are twenty-four tracks instead of seventeen. Yes, the music has been remastered and the tracks sound amazing. The tracks, though, are still from a twenty-some minute special. Some are longer than others but none lasts as long as you would hope. Enjoy these priceless snippets of music for what they are, not what they could or should be. Anything that reminds me of Peanuts brings a smile to my face. And, besides, it's about time that another special gets some recognition. A Charlie Brown Christmas soundtrack has already been released in a number of iterations. I am not saying it doesn't deserve it but it does not exist in a Peanuts vacuum either. I recommend both Great Pumpkin versions, but for Vince Guaraldi lovers everywhere this one takes the prize. Enjoy!
