Writers have an obligation to the reading public to know the rules, and break them for effect only rarely. We are a nation that speaks and writes our own language more poorly than many people in other nations speak and write English. Sometimes, the only place the public learns is from popular fiction or worse. If they are bombarded with poor English, we will continue to be unable to properly use our own language. Don't believe it? Spend an hour or so on Facebook.
