What impressed me most about this book was the way the author managed to maintain the suspense throughout particularly as there was really only one location and relatively few characters.

The tense psychological element of the story never let up and we really got into the head of Curt.

What worked was the way the characters were not good or bad but all shades of grey in between.

The interactions and personalities of the children worked well I thought of Lord of the Flies but I don't think this is a satisfactory comparision.

On reflection this story is more akin to Stephen King or James Herbert.

I just realised this is 140 000 words so credit to the author as it didn't feel like it.

All in all a great read and to use the cliche I did find it difficult to put down.

My first but not last book by this new author. I say almost perfect giving it four stars instead of five because the ending left me wanting more. I felt that the author ended it abruptly and would have liked to have known what happened to Curt, Amber and Beth "Mouse". At least a blurb before Curt's final act concluding the book. Otherwise I enjoyed the story, the creepiness and it had some great suspense. I would recommend it to other readers.

I was pulled in from the beginning. The character study of this book is unbelievable! I was actually able to feel the weight of the silence, the horror of the cleanliness and precised routine. I cared for all character in one way or another and was obsessing over all the "tiny" noise they were making, holding my breath in disbelief when they were careless , waiting for one or the other to get punished so they can finally relax for a few days. I read this book in a few days, finding myself not able to put it down, even though the story weight on me. I could feel the air being heavy, the scream being suspected and the punishment irrevocable. The strength of the mind, the will of freedom and friendship will surely be the key needed to open the door they thought was closed forever...

One of the scariest books I have read in a long while! About halfway through, the story took a turn that I did not see coming and though I was scared for the children before that turn, the second half of the story had me terrified! It so brought back all those memories of being a child afraid of what lurked in the attic, or behind that closed door to the dark basement...and I am long past being a child!

I decided to purchase this for my kindle based on Amazon's recommendations for me and I am so glad I did! I started reading it on New Year's Day and here I sit on Jan 3rd at 10:30 p.m. finished but thinking I will have to sleep with the light on tonight!

Peter Meredith is an outstanding storyteller. I've read everything he's written and have nothing but great things to say. He's just starting out now but give him a chance you won't be disappointed. He doesn't just scare, he takes the time to build his characters and allow the reader to sympathize with them. This story is more than just your average horror; it takes a building of tension to really pack in the fright. Excellent story I look forward to reading more as he writes!

BEC'S REVIEW

On reading the synopsis, I expected this story to be one of abuse and in a way it is. What I did not expect was the chilling supernatural story that is The Punished. I won't spoil anything, as it takes awhile for the book to get to the true nature of the punishment, beyond saying that the administrator and very nature of the punishments themselves chilled me to the bone. There were several times when I found myself scared reading this book, which is the true mark of any horror story.

Curtis, our main character, is only 13 years old but this does not make this a book for those of that age. The horrifying nature of the story and some particularly graphic and violent scenes makes this book enough to scare even the most well read adult. If you enjoy being scared, with your adrenalin pumping as you read a book then this book is for you. But read at your own risk as Peter Meredith is such a story teller that, if you are prone to them, this book can easily give you nightmares.

I greatly enjoyed reading The Punished. From feeling sorry for the other children who had succumbed to various forms of insanity in the house, to disliking and, in the case of Matt even hating them for their actions towards Curt; from being hopeful that Curt would escape a punishment, to grimacing when the plots of the others saw him a victim, and to being terrified at the evil that lurked in the house, this book did not fail to evoke strong emotions in me. If you think you can handle some of the frightening and graphic scenes of this book then this one is for you and, who knows, you may be made of sterner stuff than I am. But if you find yourself scared while reading, don't say I didn't warn you.

If this is a first novel, it's absolutely marvelous. I have read, or tried to read, some real turkeys of Amazon Kindle freebies and dollar books, and this book is NOT one of them. If I reasonably could have read this in one sitting, I happily would have--it was that much of a spellbinder. As it was, I really hated to put it down and return to the real world when I had to. The plot was a wee bit of an echo of a Twilight Zone episode or Shirley Jackson's The Haunting of Hill House, but even as an echo, it was alarmingly original. I was kept guessing almost all the way though, and my plot theories time and time again were shiveringly, almost joyfully, shot down to be replaced by new ones. I was THERE, and I think that's the best any author can hope for when submitting his brainchild to the world. Anything else is a bonus.

But...author's too-liberal use of the comma shaker is distracting enough, but page after page of spelling errors are REALLY jarring and distracting. They suggest not so much a scanning program's translation (common Kindle book problem) as the author's too-trusting reliance on computer spell check. Homophones, misused words, teeth-gritting "anyways"es (all characters, so it's not only one character's forgivable dialect) and "irregardless"es, you name it. Author, I know you read these reviews: please, please, hire a competent editor before releasing your works (or at least consider editorial revisions for existing ones). Someone who knows that teeth are bared, not barred (unless someone has braces?
